Talks between Dalits, who threaten to embrace Islam, and upper caste Hindus over temple ritual fail; Collector ban temple festival

Nagapattinam:A 5-day annual festival of Badrakaliyamman temple near Nagapattinam has been suspended by the district administration, after talks to resolve a dispute between Dalits and upper caste Hindus over the conduct of temple rituals, failed. “District administration attempted to arrive at an amicable solution to the issue. But, since talks held yesterday remained inconclusive, we have no other option but to suspend the festival this year,” District Collector Pazhaniswamy said on Sunday.“A case in this regard is already pending in the Madras High Court. Until the court pronounces the verdict, the festival will remain suspended,” he said. The district officials initiated talks between the two groups following reports that the Dalits in Kallimedu village had threatened to embrace Islam if they were not given the right to conduct the rituals for a full day.During the meeting, the administration came up with 3 suggestions, including increasing the number of days of the festival to 6, instead of the usual five, to allow the community to conduct the festival for a complete day. However, the upper caste Hindus declined the suggestions citing various reasons. But, they said they had no objections to Dalits conducting the rituals on any day other than the annual festival days, the Collector said. PTI
Should not embrace Islam just because of discriminated in Hinduism:TN Thowheed Jamat tells Dalits
http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/chennai/govt-must-protect-dalits-rights/article8923620.ece
Chennai: Even as 250 Dalit families in Nagapattinam district are threatening to convert to Islam after they were denied their right to perform mandagapadi, a ritual performed on day one of the 7-day festival conducted in the first week of Aadi, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi general secretary Ravi Kumar said the onus was on the govt to ensure that the rights of the Dalits to partake in temple festival were protected.Speaking about Dalits threatening to convert to Islam, he toed the line earlier taken by the party chief Thol. Thirumvalavan that conversion to another religion merely creates ‘minorities within a minority’ and reduces the collective bargaining power of the Dalits in their fight against caste discrimination.2 organisations – Hindu Makkal Katchi and Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamat – are now involved in various capacities. While the TNTJ president Pakkir Mohammed Althafi and others met the Dalits on Wednesday, Hindu Makkal Katchi is trying to resolve the issue without any need for Dalits to convert. Spokesperson of Jamat claims that it was the Dalits of Pazhag Kallimedu village, who had informed them that they are planning to convert to Islam. “Some of TNTJ members, including its president Pakkir Mohammed Althafi, met and explained to a group of around 50 people that they should not embrace Islam just because they are being discriminated in Hinduism. We encouraged them to fully understand the concepts and fundamentals of Islam. We gave them the Koran and urged them to read it. 6 persons reportedly embraced Islam on the spot,” said Abdur Rahman, spokesperson, TNTJ. Claiming that they were against forcing anyone to embrace Islam, he said that they would not turn away those willing to do so. In contrast, Rama Ravikumar leader Hindu Makkal Katchi, said members of Dalit community had assured them that they would not convert. The hindu

Una backlash: Muslims join Dalits in fight against ‘injustice’

Ahmedabad: Muslims joined thousands of Dalits in protesting against the Una incident at a mega-convention in Ahmedabad on Sunday, even as a person who consumed poison during a July 19 rally succumbed at a city hospital.Around 5,000 Dalits from places across the state gathered at Acher Depo ground in Sabarmati area, and appealed for unity in the fight against injustice and atrocities. They also pledged to stop skinning cattle carcasses and cleaning manholes as a mark of protest against the flogging incident.Dalits in some parts of Gujarat – including Surendranagar and Mehsana districts – have already stopped skinning cattle for two weeks now, forcing local administration officials to do the work.Targeting the Anandiben Patel govt, they demanded land and provision of sixth pay commission benefits to Dalit sanitation workers. The protesters also sought the invocation of the Prevention of Anti-Social Activities Act against the accused in the Una case, and a ban on their entry into four Dalit-dominated districts of the state. Members of the Una Ladat Samiti (ULS) –umbrella organisation of 20 Dalit outfits – were joined by activists of the Jamiat-e-Ulema-e-Hind Gujarat (JeU), which maintained that upper caste communities in the state were discriminating against Muslims too. “Hindu-Muslim Ekta Zindabad… Comwad Murdabad!” shouted ULS convenor Jignesh Mevani, as members of the JeU stood by his side. The protest overflowed into the main road because the allotted space was waterlogged due to heavy rains the previous night. The agitators shouted ‘Jai Bhim’ slogans, and waved flags and banners. Una victims’ kin were joined by relatives of the Dalits killed in the Thangadh police firing incident on the main stage. “While the Una incident was shocking, I am glad that it has united the community,” said Jatin Savriya, a relative of one of Una victims. Lucknow: When BSP chief Mayawati linked BJP’s demand for Naseemuddin Siddiqui’s arrest over “obscene” slogans at her party’s protest with “an attempt to communalise the elections”, she was also trying to use the controversy for her party’s benefit. Rebuffing all demands of action against Siddiqui, who was leading the protest on July 21 when “obscene” slogans targeting the daughter, sister and wife of former BJP leader Dayashankar Singh were raised, Mayawati not only defended him but also gave him more responsibilities in the party. At a press conference held last week in Lucknow, she chose to repeat what Siddiqui had said two days ago instead of coming up with her own remarks on the controversy. Siddiqui, 56, who is the BSP’s longest-serving national general secretary and a trusted lieutenant of Mayawati for over 2 decades, is currently the Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council – a post with the rank of a Cabinet minister – and is regarded as his party’s Muslim face. Killing of Burhan Wani was an accident: J&K Deputy CM Nirmal Singh
http://risingkashmir.in/news/killing-of-burhan-wani-was-an-accident-nirmal-singh
Jammu: Weeks after the killing of Hizbul commander Burhan Wani, Deputy CM Nirmal Singh Saturday said the incident was an accident. Singh went on to say that the troops were unaware of the presence of Wani at the encounter site. "It was an accident as they did not know about his presence. The troops accidentally killed Wani. Had they been aware of his presence, they would have taken precautions," said Singh. Speculations were rife after Singh's revelation. BJP, which earlier had contrasting view, seemed to be toeing the PDP line with the statement. BJP leader and Deputy CM also claimed operations would continue against the militants. "If militants would not surrender they will meet the same fate. There is no other way to deal with them but to neutralise them". He said the security forces involved in the operation had informed them about the operation saying that there were three militants. But they were not aware about the identity of the terrorists. Congress chief Spokesman, Ravinder Sharma said that the statements by Nirmal Singh were highly condemnable and objectionable. risingkashmir

Kolkata: A whistleblower had to pay with his life while another had a narrow escape after being abducted from the heart of the city - all in the past 48 hours. While the first incident was reported from Metiabruz, the abduction was in Ballygunge. The murder victim is a 41-year-old trader, Sk Nazrul Islam, a resident of Lichubagan in Metiabruz, who had been leading a citizens' crusade against a gang of drug and satta dealers for three years. A year ago, he and wife Salma Bibi, who was pregnant at the time, were beaten up. She suffered a miscarriage. This time, the gang allegedly planned the murder after Nazrul began protesting against hooking of illegal electricity connections by the rowdies.Around 11.45pm on Friday, Nazrul walked about 200 metres from his residence to an open plot where he would marshal his fellow crusaders to resist gangs that were trying to openly sell ganja in the area. He was talking to three neighbours when six armed men rushed in and started attacking him with shovels and iron rods, police say, adding that the gang had cut off electricity to the area before the attack. In the darkness, they brutally tortured and mutilated him."What they did to Nazrul is barbaric. His face has been mutilated and his eyes gouged out. They stabbed iron rods inside his nostrils and ripped them apart. They also smashed all his teeth with shovels. He died on the spot," said the victim's nephew Mehfuz Alam. Iraqi military commanders should prevent militias with records of serious abuses from taking part in a planned offensive on the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant-held city of Mosul, a New-York based rights group has said. The battle for Mosul, ISIL's de facto capital in Iraq and the largest city anywhere in its self-proclaimed caliphate, is expected later this year but plans have not been finalised, officials and diplomats in Baghdad have said.Army, police and special forces are expected to participate, with air support from a US-led coalition. The role of Kurdish Peshmerga forces and Shia militias from the Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) is unresolved and remains a point of contention. They will likely join in the larger battle but may be restricted to the city's outskirts, the officials said."Iraqi commanders shouldn't risk exposing Mosul civilians to serious harm by militias with a record of recent abuse," said Joe Stork, deputy Middle East director at Human Rights Watch. aljazeera

Bangladesh Govt using Jamaat as political card: BNP
http://en.prothom-alo.com/bangladesh/news/114251/Govt-using-Jamaat-as-political-card-Hannan-Shah
Dhaka: Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) standing committee member Hannan Shah on Saturday alleged that the govt is using Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami as its political card instead of banning the party.“Jamaat’s registration has been cancelled with the High Court’s order, making the party disqualified for contesting any election. I want to ask the govt why you’re so worried about it (banning Jamaat),” he said.Speaking at a discussion, the BNP leader further said, “You (AL leaders) had said Jamaat would be banned in parliament’s June last budget session. The June is over, but nothing has done in this regard. It has demonstrated that they (govt) are using Jamaat as their political card.”Hannan Shah alleged that though the ruling party men speak much against Jamaat, they make more relationship with the Islamist party leaders than BNP ones. prothom-alo
