New Delhi: The former Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, Maulana Mohammed Sirajul Hasan passed away today evening at his hometown in Raichur, Karnataka. He was 88 years of age.

Describing him as a towering personality of the Muslim Ummah and the Islamic Movement the Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind - Syed Sadatullah Hussaini said: "We shall always cherish his contribution towards serving Islam and the Muslim community. His death is a tremendous loss to the 'Millat' and the Islamic Movement. He was both a visionary and caring leader. He was associated with Jamaat since his youth. From 1958 onwards, he remained the Zonal Chief of Karnataka Jamaat for 28 years. He was deputed as Secretary of Jamaat in Delhi in 1984. He was the All India Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind from 1984 until 2003. He played an active role in the All India Mulsim Personal Law Board, All India Muslim Majlis e Mushawarat and the Babri Masjid Coordination Committee. He was a compelling speaker; maintained warm and cordial relations, possessed a balanced approach and had a simple yet hardworking personality. The Islamic Movement derived immense benefit from these noble characteristics. The Indian Muslim community passed through various trials and tribulations during his tenure as Ameer (Chief). The Jamaat was banned after the demolition of the Babri Masjid in 1992. He played a stellar role in solving the various problems and challenges in its aftermath with his vision and moderate approach. He had a keen interest in the propagation of Islam. He had very strong ties with other prominent religious heads. He established the "Dharmic Jan Morcha" for bringing them together."

Talking about his personal relation with the former JIH chief, the Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind said: "Maulana Sirajul Hasan played an important role in grooming and training me. He prepared thousands of youth like me for the Islamic Movement. I pray that Allah accepts the yeoman service of Maulana Sirajul Hasan, pardons him, grants him Paradise and gives patience to his family members for bearing this loss.”
