Why Devanagari numerals on notes, Madras HC questions govt
http://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-news-india/demonetisation-madras-hc-centre-devanagari-script-on-notes-4389246/
New Delhi: Petitioner contended that the usage of ‘Devanagari’ numerals is against the Indian Constitution and, therefore, asked the court to declare the newly-introduced Rs2,000 notes as ‘invalid’. In what may give the opposition parties further ammunition to target Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Madras High Court has questioned the ruling dispensation on what authority it has printed ‘Devanagari’ numerals on the new Rs 2000 currency notes along with the regular English numerical. On Monday, Madurai bench of the Madras High Court had posed this question to the Centre while hearing a PIL filed by KPT Ganesan, a Madurai resident. He had also demanded a reply from the Finance Ministry on the same. Citing Article 343 of the Constitution, the petitioner argued that only international form of Indian numerals can be used for official purposes of the Union. He also contended that the usage of ‘Devanagari’ numerals is against the Indian Constitution and, therefore, asked the court to declare the newly-introduced Rs 2,000 notes as ‘invalid’.According to Ganesan, the Official Languages Act, 1963 doesn’t allow any provision for the use of Devanagiri numerals. He also pointed out that even the President didn’t give the nod for any such usage of Devanagiri. indian express

Bokil said the government used his advice selectively. He also told the news outlet that he will be meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday. Srinagar: 2 freshly minted Rs 2,000 notes were found on the 2 militants who were gunned down on Tuesday in an encounter by security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Bandipora district.A cache of arms and ammunition were recovered, in addition to Rs 15,000 in cash — 2 Rs 2,000 notes and the remaining in Rs 100 notes.According to an Indian Army spokesperson in Srinagar, a joint operation was launched by the army and the local police based on specific information in Hajin in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district. The encounter ended after the 2 militants were gunned down and a combing operation was carried out.Preliminary reports suggest the duo — both believed to be foreigners — belonged to Lashkar-e-Taiba, police said, but their identity is yet to be ascertained. In Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s surprise announcement on Nov.8 on scrapping of high denomination banknotes, he cited as one of the key targets of the denomination drive militants allegedly funded by counterfeit Indian currency from Pakistan.HT
Bombay HC prima facie finds inconsistencies in 2 RBI circulars regarding demonetisation
 http://www.livelaw.in/bombay-hc-prima-facie-finds-inconsistencies-two-rbi-circulars-regarding-demonetisation/
Bombay High Court has sought the RBI’s response in a petition that challenges a circular issued by central bank on Nov.14. More importantly, the division bench headed by Justice AS Oka observed that prima facie there were inconsistencies between 2 circulars issued. Primary circular that was issued notifying demonetisation of 500 and 1000 rupee notes was issued on Nov.8,however another circular was issued on Nov.14. Circular prohibits district co-operative banks from allowing exchange or deposit of old 500 and 100 rupee notes. The petition filed by Solapur District Central Co-operative bank says that by prohibiting district central co-operative banks from either providing the facility to exchange discontinued currency notes with new ones,or allowing account holders to deposit discontinued currency notes the centre has exceeded its own powers. It is also the petitioner’s contention that under Section 26(2) district co-operative banks come under the purview of the primary notification, which means these banks should have been able to exchange old notes for new ones and accept deposits of the old notes. However, by this Nov.14 circular centre has circumvented the authority of RBI. Livelaw.in

The protesters marched from Mandi House to Jantar-Mantar and raised slogans demanding justice to Rohith, who had committed suicide in January, and recovery of Najeeb, who disappeared from his hostel on Oct.15 after a brawl with ABVP members the previous night, last month. Rohith’s mother Radhika and Najeeb’s mother Fatima Nafees addressed the gathering and appealed the “peace-loving people” of the country to stand in solidarity to meet the challenges of the present times. The march organised by Students Islamic Organisation of India (SIO) was also aimed at seeking justice to the people including minority community members and tribals killed in various parts of the country. “Several incidents act as witness to the fact that there are some miscreants present in society who enjoy sympathy of people in power. They spread communal hatred, assault the Dalits, Adivasis, target Muslims, kidnap and kill innocents and propagate lies. This is challenging the internal security and law of the land,” Laeeq Ahmed Khan Aqil, national secretary of SIO said.Several social and political activists including Shezad Poonawala, John Dayal, Ashish Khetan and Navid Hamid also addressed the gathering.PTI

Now Egypt court overturns Morsi's life sentence
http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2016/11/egypt-court-overturns-mohamed-morsi-life-sentence-161122074711134.html
Egypt's deposed president Mohamed Morsi has had a life sentence overturned by the country's Court of Cassation, which ordered a retrial in the case that revolves around accusations of espionage with Palestinian group Hamas.Morsi, Egypt's first democratically elected president, had a death sentence overturned by the same court last week and a retrial was ordered.Morsi's lawyer, Abdel Moneim Abdel Maqsoud, told AFP that the sentences against several Muslim Brotherhood officials, who stood trial alongside Morsi on charges of spying for Iran and Hamas, were also overturned. Explaining the recent ruling, Yehia Ghanem, Al Jazeera's Middle East analyst, said "from a judicial point of view, the court of cassation is the least politicised court in the country"."The authorities in Egypt established a special judicial district three years ago to deal mainly with cases of what they call 'terrorism', or espionage and other charges that are politicised," Ghanem said. This district is where Morsi and thousands of others have been tried, Ghanem adde, and "any opposition in Egypt is now tried under 'terrorism'". "The trial itself failed to come up with any evidence to substantiate the charges."Morsi's trials, and the trials of thousands of other opposition figures and civilians over the last 3 years, have been criticised heavily by rights groups, including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International. aljazeera

More than 1,000 soldiers deployed by Iran to Syria to back the government side in its civil war have been killed, an Iranian official said, underlining Tehran's increasing presence on front lines of the conflict. It was a major increase in the reported death toll from just four months ago, when the Islamic Republic announced that 400 of its soldiers had died on Syria's battlefields.Iran has been sending fighters to Syria since the early stages of the more than five-year-old war to support its ally, President Bashar al-Assad, against rebels and Islamist militants including Islamic State trying to topple him.Reuters

Arbil, Iraq:More than 68,000 people have fled their homes since Iraqi forces launched a huge offensive against the Islamic State group in and around Mosul last month, UN said Tuesday. The figure increased significantly over the past week as forces battled deep into the densely populated city, but it falls short of pre-offensive predictions.“68,550 people are currently displaced and in need of humanitarian assistance,” the United Nations’ Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said in a statement.OCHA said the aid response to the offensive launched against the jihadists on Oct.17 was growing in complexity, with varying needs for different categories of civilians.AFP

Protesting against the Israeli ban on the Muslim call to prayer, hundreds of Muslims, Christians and Jewish Sumerians yesterday raised the Muslim call to prayer together in Nablus’ main square, the Safa news agency reported.Residents, representatives of Palestinian factions and followers and representatives of all three monotheistic religions attended the protest, under the slogan “minarets will never be silenced”. All of the participants raised the athan (call to prayer) together. Activist Mazen Al-Danbak, who called for organising the protest a week ago, said: “This protest sends a message to the Israeli occupation telling it to stop playing with our holy sites, as well as sending a message to the world asking it where it is regarding these flagrant violations against holy sites.”“We tell the occupation to leave our land and we insist that it will not be able to silence the minarets and will not stop them calling Allahu Akbar.” middle east monitor

Israeli government has announced plans to demolish Umm al-Hiran, a Bedouin village in the country's southern Negev region that is home to Palestinian citizens of Israel. At time of publication, ILA had not replied to Al Jazeera's request for comment. Israeli government plans to build a Jewish village for families linked to illegal settlement movement in the occupied West Bank in the place of Umm al-Hiran, while forcibly transferring Palestinian villagers to planned townships in Negev desert.aljazeera

Trump's 'extreme' Muslim registry plans revealed by potential cabinet minister
http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/donald-trump-kris-kobach-muslim-registry-plan-revealed-photo-a7431546.html
Details have emerged of what a plan for a Muslim registry under Donald Trump might look like, after they were revealed - apparently accidentally - by one of his potential cabinet members.Kris Kobach is considered the front runner to head up the Department of Homeland Security when Mr Trump forms his administration in January next year.So some say it is ironic that he was photographed as he arrived for a meeting with the President-elect with a supposedly confidential strategy document visible under his arm.A cynic would call it a deliberate ploy to get attention for the "Kobach strategic plan for first 365 days", which is how the document is headed. The proposals involve restarting a post-9/11 era security programme called Nseers (the National Security Entry-Exit registration system), which meant men from certain Muslim-majority countries were subject to additional checks and monitored during their time in the country. http://aa.com.tr/en/americas/erdogan-anti-trump-protests-disrespect-to-democracy/690401
ANKARA: President Tayyip Erdogan on Monday denounced a wave of protests in the U.S. after Donald Trump was elected president.“All that was done in opposition to Trump in Europe and across the United States is a disrespect to democracy,” Erdogan told Israeli-based Channel 2 in an exclusive interview.“First and foremost, those who believe in the ballot need to have respect” for the results, the president said.“If they don’t, then this means they don’t understand democracy, they can’t tolerate it and they don’t have respect for it.”Hours after the results showed a stunning victory for Trump, protests began in dozens of cities against the president-elect and continued for days.Erdogan said he and Trump spoke via telephone on the first night after his election. “We agreed that there are a lot of things we are going to do between Turkey and the United States,” he said. http://www.hindustantimes.com/world-news/ishfaq-nadeem-ahmed-expected-to-be-named-next-pak-army-chief/story-0Q42uQI6A7bGbh5Om7RfVK.html
New Delhi: Lt Gen Ishfaq Nadeem Ahmed, currently serving as Multan Corps commander and a key player in counter-terrorism operations, is expected to be named the next Pakistan Army chief, according to a media report on Tuesday. With the current chief, Gen Raheel Sharif, set to retire on Nov.29, the process has begun for Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to choose his successor. Ahmed is reported to be among the four senior-most generals who were being considered for the post. The influential Dawn paper quoted unnamed aides of the prime minister as saying that Sharif had already made up his mind about the next army chief but he has kept his cards close to his chest.“Though the prime minister is the only person who definitely knows who the next army chief will be, the word in political circles is that Lt Gen Ishfaq Nadeem (Ahmed), who is currently serving as Multan corps commander, will be named the army chief,” the report said.Lt Gen Ishfaq, belongs to the Azad Kashmir Regiment, had previously served as Chief of General Staff. He was appointed to that post by Gen Sharif. Earlier Ahmed had drawn up the blueprint for Operation Zarb-e-Azb, the army’s campaign against terrorism, during his stint as DMGO. Gen Sharif formally began his farewell visits to army units on Monday, ending widespread speculation that he could be given an extension and paving the way for the civilian government to name his successor.HT
Hundreds of Rohingya cross into Bangladesh, fleeing unrest

Dhaka:Hundreds of Rohingya have arrived in Bangladesh after fleeing violence in neighbouring Myanmar, community leaders said today, many with horrific tales of troops killing and burning villages.Bangladesh says it has prevented hundreds more from crossing into the country, despite pleas from the United Nations to open its border after up to 30,000 Rohingya were displaced by violence in Myanmar’s Rakhine state. Bangladeshi troops have intensified patrols along the 237-km border, but Rohingya community leaders estimate that 1,000 people have still managed to get in over the last week. Most are hiding out in camps for the 32,000 legally registered already living in southeast Bangladesh, fearing repatriation if they are found by authorities.AFP
