SC Judge Gowda recuses himself from hearing CBI plea against dropping of criminal charges on Advani, Joshi Uma Bharti in Babri Masjid demolition case
http://www.hindustantimes.com/india/babri-demolition-case-sc-judge-recuses-from-hearing-criminal-appeals/story-PbsrdKVrPF6m8q6I3XjHuN.html
New Delhi: A Supreme Court judge, on Thursday, recused from hearing appeals pertaining to dropping of criminal conspiracy charge against LK Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Uma Bharti and other BJP-VHP leaders in the Babri Masjid demolition case.Justice V Gopala Gowda, who was heading the bench also comprising Justice Arun Mishra, recused himself from the hearing without citing any reason and said, “let the matter be placed before the Chief Justice” for its allocation to some other bench. The appeals were filed by one Haji Mahboob Ahmad and CBI against the dropping of conspiracy charges against senior BJP leaders Advani, Joshi and 16 others, for demolition of the disputed medieval structure in Ayodhya on Dec.6, 1992.The pleas had sought setting aside of the Allahabad High Court’s order of May 20, 2010, which had dropped section 120B (criminal conspiracy) under the IPC while upholding a special court’s decision. In Sept.last year, the CBI had told the apex court that its decision-making was not influenced by anyone and the dropping of criminal conspiracy charge against senior BJP leaders in the case was not at its instance.“The decision-making process of CBI is completely independent. All decisions are taken based on correct facts in the light of the extant law. There is no question of any person, body or institution influencing the decision-making process of CBI or the manner in which it pursues its cases in courts,” the agency had said in an affidavit.Earlier, the SC had sought responses of Advani, Joshi, union minister Uma Bharti and 16 others on Ahmad’s plea.Besides BJP leaders Advani, Joshi and Bharti, the court had also sought response from Himachal Pradesh Governor Kalyan Singh, among others. Anti-Islam remarks: Muslim bodies slam Kerala HC judge
http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/kerala/hc-judges-remarks-on-sharia-draw-ire/article8333913.ece
Remarks by Justice B. Kemal Pasha, a sitting judge of the Kerala High Court, at a seminar in Kozhikode early this week on the Muslim Personal Law, have sparking off vocal protests from Muslim organisations across the political and ideological divides.Protestors have come out in unison against what they allege as attempts to amend Muslim Personal Law, deeming it to be discriminatory against women. Justice Pasha, possibly in a jibe aimed at the religious outfits, had asked if Muslim men could have the privilege of 4 wives, why not Muslim women too could have 4 husbands.Shaikh Muhammed Karakunnu, Assistant Ameer of Jamaate-e-Islamic Hind, Kerala, said that Justice Pasha had touched upon two topics adopted by Sharia. “Polygamy is very much inevitable at times considering the humanitarian factor. Who will marry a young widow whose husband died in the Kargil war or who has met with a fatal accident, and provide for their children,” he asked. He said the paternity of a child cannot be decided if women had four husbands. Besides, inheritance in Islam is based on the idea that men are responsible for protecting women and children. It is the husband who pays maintenance to the wife after divorce and not vice versa, he added. Suprabhatham, a Malayalam daily run by the Sunni group of the Samastha Kerala Jam Iyyathul Ulema identified with Islamic cleric EK Aboobacker Musaliar, in an editorial, lashed out at the judge’s remarks saying that it would only help to strengthen the apologists of Uiform Civil Code, UCC.What Justice Pasha thinks about inheritance and divorce rights of women is not different from what the RSS conceives. Kerala Naduvathul Mujahideen State president TP Abdulla Madani, general secretary PP Unneerkutty, and Kerala Jameyathul Ulama secretary M. Mohammed Moulavi warned that any attempts to dissect Islamic Sharia through the prism of modernism would have far-reaching ramifications. “This is not for the first time Sharia has been subjected to such discussions. Time and again, these discussions have crossed limits,” they said. According to them, polyandry was unscientific and irreligious, while polygamy was scientific, religious and its objective is betterment of society. ‘‘Moves against Muslim Personal Law by people in responsible positions is a cause for concern. It has to be suspected whether the allegations raised against Sharia are part of the anti-Muslim movement,’’ they said. The Hindu  report

New Delhi: Mathrubhumi, a leading Malayalam daily in Kerala, put out an apology on its front page today after it printed a purportedly offensive comment curated from social media on Prophet Muhammad in its Kozhikode and Thrissur editions on Wednesday. The apology came after enraged Muslim organisations held protests outside the newspaper’s offices. Groups like the PFI said the comment hurt the sentiments of the community. The paper in its apology said the comment, that was picked up from social media, was added as a reaction to the speech made by Justice Kemal Pasha on the topic ‘Law against domestic abuse’ at a seminar.“We understand the comments hurt the sentiments of followers. We apologise deeply for the error,” the newspaper said. Mathrubhumi also confirmed that it would take appropriate action against those responsible for the ‘careless’ mistake. indian express

Row after Kanhaiya says ‘in Kashmir women are raped by security personnel’

New Delhi:JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar found himself in a spot on Wednesday over remarks made by him at a student’s gathering on women’s day with the BJP’s youth wing filing a police complaint over his alleged defiance of bail conditions by making “anti-national” statements.“No matter how much you try to stop us, we will speak up against human rights violations. We will raise our voice against AFSPA. While we have a lot of respect for our soldiers, we will still talk about the fact that in Kashmir women are raped by security personnel,” Kanhaiya said while addressing students at a women’s day march late on Tuesday night. “During war in Rwanda 1000 women were raped. In Africa during the ethnic conflict, when military attacks other group firstly their women were raped. You take example of Gujarat, women were not just killed but were raped first,” he added. Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha on Wednesday filed a complaint in Vasant Vihar police station against Kanhaiya and JNU professor Nivedita Menon saying they made “anti-national” statements in the aftermath of Feb.9 event.A senior police officer said, “We have received the complaint and the matter is being looked into. No FIR has been registered yet”. “Despite the submission of an undertaking before court, Kanhaiya has yet again addressed a gathering of students and uttered poisonous words against the Indian Army, labelling them as rapists of Kashmiri Women,” a BJYM statement said. Kanhaiya’s party AISF maintained that, “he made the remarks in context of atrocities on women worldwide and not just in Kashmir. He in no way meant to demean Army or any other force and he clarified that in his speech too”.PTI

While putting the role of BJP and RSS under scanner,Sharma who was flanked by ex-minister Geeta Bhukkal and Karan Dalal categorically hinted out towards role of INLD as well in the caste riots. This was for the first time when 3 Congress MLAs from ex-CM Bhupinder Hooda's camp had raised voice for the restoration of peace and harmony among all the castes. 3 MLAs also alleged scam in the disbursal of compensation while accusing the officers of adopting pick and choose policy for selection of claimants. "RSS has the perfection of creating such kind of divide among society. Since they could not do this communally hence they created caste divide, that too with perfection. Unfortunately, this CM too could not position himself and is singing RSS songs so far. He has failed to handle the situation for good 4 days. His MLAs and ministers are accused him of being hijacked by two ministers, hence you can imagine Khattar's calibre," said Sharma.Geeta Bhukkal elaborated as how govt  has after delayed action named son of a BJP leaders for rioting. “Rioting men had targeted my house, not even as single cop had turned out. Everybody knows about Army action in Jhajjar, If they cannot protect dalits and weak. Which govt are they talking about, now the governor should dismiss the govt at once,'' she said. Unfortunately, first RSS backed BJP men created riots now to ensure that divide continue to exist now they have given slogans of 35 communities versus one community slogan, said Bhukkal. TOI

Sana'a: A top leader of Yemen’s Shiite rebels has issued a harsh rebuke of ally Iran, calling upon Tehran to back away from the crisis in Yemen. Youssef al-Fishi, a top military commander of the rebels known as Houthis, is asking Iranian officials to “remain silent” and “stop exploiting” the Yemeni civil war for their own interests. The remarks, posted on al-Fishi’s Facebook page on Thursday, underscore how the formerly firm Houthi—Tehran alliance may be faltering after a year-long Saudi-led air campaign targeting the rebels. The rebuke comes a day after Saudi Arabia announced it has carried out a prisoners’ exchange for the first time with Yemeni tribes.AP

Cairo/Riyadh: Riyadh's confirmation of a rare confidence-building measure in the conflict came a day after senior Yemeni officials said a delegation from the Houthis was in Saudi Arabia for talks to end the war.A Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen said on Wednesday it had exchanged prisoners with its Houthi opponents and also welcomed a pause in combat on the border, prompting hopes of a push to end the year-long war that has killed some 6,000 people. Riyadh's confirmation of a rare confidence-building measure in the conflict came a day after senior Yemeni officials said a delegation from the Houthis, who are allies of the kingdom's arch foe Iran, was in Saudi Arabia for talks to end the war. However, both the Saudi Arabian and Yemeni foreign ministers later said any formal negotiations to end the fighting could only take place under the auspices of the UN and must include Yemen's internationally recognised govt .

Beirut: Top Islamic State commander leader Omar al-Shishani, known as Omar the Chechen, was "seriously injured" in a recent strike in northeastern Syria but not killed despite US suggestions to the contrary, a monitoring group said.Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Wednesday that according to its sources the March 4 strike had indeed targeted jihadist's convoy, killing his bodyguards, while Shishani himself "was seriously injured". "He's not dead," observatory's director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP. "He was taken from the province of Hasake to a hospital in Raqa province where he was treated by a jihadist doctor of European origin," he said. While Shishani's exact rank is unclear, Richard Barrett of the US-based Soufan Group has described him as ISIS's "most senior military commander", adding that he has been in charge of key battles. "He is clearly a very capable commander and has the loyalty of Chechen fighters who are considered by ISIS as elite troops," Barrett said.AFP
IS defector brings 'goldmine' of details on 22,000 supporters: REUTERS

London: A disillusioned former member of Islamic State has passed a stolen memory stick of documents identifying 22,000 supporters in over 50 countries to a British journalist, a leak that could help the West target Islamist fighters planning attacks.Leaks of such detailed information about Islamic State are rare and give Britain's spies a potential trove of data that could help unmask militants who have threatened more attacks like those that killed 130 people in Paris last November.A man calling himself Abu Hamed, a former member of Islamic State who became disillusioned with its leaders, passed the files to Britain's Sky News on a memory stick he said he had stolen from the head of the group's internal security force. On it were enrolment forms containing the names of IS supporters and of their relatives, telephone numbers, and other details such as the subjects' areas of expertise and who had recommended them. One of the files, marked "Martyrs", detailed a group of IS members who were willing and trained to carry out suicide attacks, Sky said.Richard Barrett, a former head of global counter-terrorism at Britain's MI6 Secret Intelligence Service, said the cache was "a fantastic coup" in the fight against IS.

I think Islam hates us: Donald Trump
http://www.india.com/news/world/i-think-islam-hates-us-donald-trump-1022013/
Washington: In yet another round of controversial remarks, Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump has said he thinks “Islam hates us” and asserted that those having hatred against the US cannot be allowed to enter the country. ”I think Islam hates us,” Trump told CNN, deploring the “tremendous hatred” that he said partly defined the religion. Trump, 69, maintained that the war was against radical Islam, but said, “it’s very hard to define. It’s very hard to separate. Because you don’t know who’s who.” Asked if the hate was “in Islam itself,” Trump said that was for the media to figure out. ”You’re gonna have to figure that out, OK?” he said when asked if there was hatred in the religion itself. ”We have to be very vigilant. We have to be very careful. And we can’t allow people coming into this country who have this hatred of the United States,” Trump said.  india.com
Islamist groups threat large-scale protests as Bangladesh mulls scrapping Islam as state religion: AFP
http://www.hindustantimes.com/world/threats-as-bangladesh-mulls-scrapping-islam-as-state-religion/story-pAF2AMcFnVlj7uQFBd23ZO.html
Dhaka: Islamist groups in Bangladesh on Thursday threatened large-scale protests if a court moves to scrap Islam as the official state religion of the Muslim-majority nation.Bangladesh is officially secular, but Islam has been the state religion for almost three decades. More than 90 % of the population is Muslim, with Hindus and Buddhists the main minorities. The High Court is considering a petition by secularists who say Islam’s status as the state religion conflicts with Bangladesh’s secular charter and discriminates against non-Muslims.Furious Islamist hardliners this week urged the court to dismiss the petition at a hearing on March 27, threatening large-scale protests if it moves to scrap Islam’s special status.“Any move to scrap Islam’s status will undermine and defame the religion,” Mufti Mohammad Faezullah, secretary general of Islamist political party Islamic Oikya Jote (IOJ) said. “Obviously the Islamic parties, general people and the clerics will resist the move by holding protests,” he said.“If there is such conspiracy and the govt  and the judiciary bow their heads to these people (secularists), Muslims of all walks of life will hit the roads; fire of resistance will light up across the country,” Hefajat-e-Islam, an Islamist group, said in a statement earlier this week.AFP
