New Delhi: 23 days after JNU student Najeeb Ahmed went missing, his mother Fatima Nafees was on Sunday dragged on the road by the Delhi Police as she resisted her detention during a protest near the India Gate. "Najeeb's mother was manhandled by the Delhi Police. Beaten up and dragged into the police van. Later, she was taken to Mayapuri police station," JNU Students Union member Satarupa Chakraborty said. "The police blocked all the ways to India Gate and detained the peaceful protesters from the National Archive to different police stations," she added."Police have detained us and have brutally beaten us and have broken our mobile phones. Many protesters have been detained and are being taken to different locations. New Delhi: Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) has issued a notice to Police Commissioner, seeking an explanation for the alleged misbehaviour by policemen with female students of JNU during a protest. “I have received a complaint from a girl regarding alleged groping and physical abuse by a police officer during a peaceful protest for missing JNU student Najeeb Ahmed at India Gate. A picture which clearly shows a policeman groping her was displayed today in the newspaper,” DCW chief Swati Maliwal said in the letter issued to Delhi Police Commissioner Alok Verma.“Complainant has also informed the commission that there were no female police personnel deputed there and when the girl students objected to this, the policemen abused the students, passed sexist comments and forcefully dragged the girls to a bus which too did not have any female policeperson,” she added.PTI

New Delhi:A day after Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal met President Pranab Mukherjee to express concern over what he called the high handedness of Delhi Police in handling the JNU students union protest and Police's inability to find Najeeb Ahmed for 24 days.Less than 24 hours later Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) denied that the President had sought a report from the ministry. News network NDTV has approached the Supreme Court against a controversial central govt notice ordering its Hindi channel, NDTV India, off the air for a day, one of the group’s top directors tweeted on Monday. NDTV India was asked to go off the air on Nov.9 after govt said the channel revealed sensitive details during its coverage of a militant attack on the Pathankot airbase.This was the first time a channel was asked to stop broadcasting over concerns about national security.But the order has been widely panned with activists, journalists and opposition politicians accusing BJP-led govt of singling out NDTV and muzzling free speech.Many of them have also dubbed the order a return of the “Emergency-era” blackout of television channels.But govt has defended the action, saying many other channels were banned in the past and that free speech couldn’t be absolute or override national security.HT

Noida: Police are yet to arrest Suresh Chavhanke, owner and editor-in-chief of Sudarshan News Network, 3 days after an FIR was lodged against him for rape, attempt to murder, and fraud. FIR also names Narain Sai, son of self-proclaimed godman Asaram Bapu, for attempt to rape.On Wednesday, a former employee of the Sudarshan channel had filed an FIR in the women’s police station in Noida alleging that Chavhanke had raped her and attempted to have unnatural sex with her on Oct. 20. She also accused Narain Sai of attempting to rape her in Sept.2013.The victim further claimed that Chavhanke had been sexually exploiting her since 2013 on the promise of marriage and had also taken cash and jewellery worth Rs. 27 lakh from her.The police have booked Chavhanke under 11 sections of IPC including charges of rape, attempted unnatural sex, attempt to murder, forced miscarriage, criminal intimidation, cheating and outraging the modesty of a woman. While Sai is currently in Surat jail in a previous case, the police are yet to arrest Chavhanke. Anju Tevatia, investigating officer of the case, said that the police have not yet completed the investigation. “We are still investigating the case. The decision to arrest Chavhanke would be taken only after that,” she said.

Bhopal:A group of Muslim elders and leaders from Bhopal will soon visit families of 6 SIMI men from the state killed by police in an alleged encounter, along with two others, on Oct.31. The other 2 men shot dead in the “gun battle” were from Gujarat and Maharashtra. 5 men namely Amjad Khan,Mohammad Aqeel Khilji,Mehboob Guddu, Zakir Hussein and Mohammad Saliq alias Sallu, were from Khandwa.Other from the state, Abdul Majid, hailed from Mahidpur town in Ujjain. Group would pay visits to Khandwa and Ujjain to console the bereaved families and interact with them, said Masood Ahmed Khan, secretary of the Madhya Pradesh unit of the Coordination Committee for Indian Muslims (CCIM). He said they were also exploring legal options so that “victims of the encounter get justice.” Many Muslims groups in Bhopal, including the MP unit of the CCIM, too alleged the encounter was stage- managed and demanded a probe by a sitting judge of the Supreme Court.The visit of the Muslim elders assume significance in the wake of a SC guidelines that states: “If the family of any victim finds that all the SC guidelines have not been followed or there exists a pattern of abuse or lack of independent investigation or impartiality by any of the functionaries, it can make a complaint to the Session Judge having territorial jurisdiction over the place of incident”. Case pertaining to the encounter, observers said, could take a new turn based on the stand the families take during their meeting with the Muslim leaders. On Friday Muslim groups were denied permission by Bhopal administration to hold a public meeting at Iqbal Maidan. Later several members of the community gathered at Tarjume Wali mosque and demanded justice for the “boys.”They also announced to hold a massive meeting over the incident soon.

These are some of the pointers that have led senior police officers in Madhya Pradesh to admit that the jailbreak of 8 activists of the banned SIMI last Monday was a result not just of lax policing, but of insider help and complicity. Hours after the jailbreak, the 8 were gunned down in an encounter in Acharpura about 12 km away, with audio clips suggesting that the police were instructed to “finish them all”, and videos that show personnel shooting at bodies on the ground.A senior police officer saod, on the condition of anonymity, that the extent of “inside help” involved in the jailbreak was “staggering”.When contacted, MP Home Minister Bhupendra Singh said it was “impossible to escape without inside collusion” and alleged that the jailbreak was facilitated by “funding from outside”.“The first indicator of foul play is the non-functioning of the 3 CCTV cameras that point to where the undertrials were lodged in Block B. “There are around 50 cameras in the jail, most of which are working, but these three being off together is far too much of a coincidence. The ruling came three weeks after the SC had agreed to examine acts of cow vigilantism and had asked all the states and Central govt to reply to the PILs on August 21.A number of PILs were filed by activists and political leaders across the country demanding action against growing violence in the name of protecting cows. New Delhi: Supreme Court has dismissed a plea seeking review of its decision upholding the clean chit given by subordinate courts to BJP President Amit Shah in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case. SC rejected the plea of activist Harsh Mander challenging the order by which it had dismissed the appeal against the discharge of the BJP leader in the case by the Bombay High Court upholding the trial court order. "We have perused the review petition and the connected papers. We do not find any error in the order impugned, much less an apparent error on the face of the record so as to call for its review.”"The review petition is accordingly dismissed," a bench of Justices S A Bobde and Ashok Bhushan said in its order of Oct.19.PTI

New Delhi:India and China have agreed to maintain the pace of their high-level exchanges in counter- terrorism and other fields after “friendly and open” discussions between their National Security Advisors. NSA Ajit Doval and his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi, State Councillor, concluded their discussions in Hyderabad yesterday in a “friendly, open and cordial environment”, it was officially stated here on Saturday. Ministry of External Affairs said their discussions covered a wide agenda spanning bilateral, regional and international issues of mutual interest. New Delhi: NIA's probe into 2 bank accounts in Kashmir on suspicion of links with separatists has drawn a blank. However, given the ongoing unrest in the Valley the agency will wait for some time before filing a closure report, officials said. The agency had registered a preliminary enquiry in August following intelligence inputs that the two bank accounts in J&K Bank's Kupwara and Tral branches may have been used to finance the unrest that erupted in the valley after militant Burhan Wani was killed in an encounter with security forces on July 8. The probe has not revealed any direct links of the bank accounts with the unrest in Kashmir or with separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani's son Nayeem Khan, who was summoned by the NIA in connection with the probe in August, a senior NIA official said. "As of now, we have no new leads into the case, but we would like to wait for some more time before filing a closure," said the NIA official, who did not wish to be identified. The bank account under scanner at the Kupwara branch was in the name of a local trading firm while the second account in Tral near Phulwama has recently been changed to a cash credit account to avail bank loans. These accounts caught the attention of the authorities due to unusual high remittances, the NIA said after initiating a preliminary enquiry. However, instead of letting it go, she chose to take the matter live on social media. Baghdad/Ain Issa:Islamic State fighters targeted Iraqi troops with car bombs and ambushes in Mosul, stalling an army advance in their north Iraq stronghold, but faced attack on a new front on Sunday when US-backed rebels launched a campaign for the Syrian city of Raqqa. Jihadists have lost control of 7 eastern districts of Mosul to Iraqi special forces who broke through their lines last Monday. Officials say the militants are now sheltering among civilians in those neighbourhoods and targeting soldiers in what one called the world’s “toughest urban warfare”. 3-week Mosul campaign has brought together a force of around 100,000 soldiers, security forces, Shi’ite militias and Kurdish fighters, backed by a US-led coalition, to crush the Sunni jihadists.Across the border, US-backed Syrian fighters announced on Sunday the start of their own campaign, called Euphrates Anger, to recapture Islamic State’s Syrian bastion of Raqqa. Syria Democratic Forces (SDF) is an alliance of Kurdish and Arab armed groups which has seized large swathes of territory along the Syria-Turkey border from Islamic State and pushed to within 30 km of Raqqa.But the prominence within SDF ranks of Kurdish People’s Protection Units, or YPG, has raised questions over its suitability as a force to capture the predominantly Arab city.
