http://www.newindianexpress.com/world/2016/nov/29/bajwa-takes-over-as-pakistan-army-chief-promises-to-improve-loc-situation-1543837.html
Rawalpindi: General Qamar Javed Bajwa today took over as Pakistan's new army chief succeeding Gen Raheel Sharif and promised to improve the tense situation at the LoC soon.Gen Raheel handed over the command of world's sixth- largest army by troop numbers to 57-year-old Bajwa at a ceremony held in Army Hockey Stadium, close to General HQRS (GHQ) in Rawalpindi. After taking charge as the COAS from Raheel, Bajwa spoke to reporters."The situation at the LoC will improve soon," he was quoted as saying by Geo News. Bajwa sought support from the media to play a role in the keeping the morale of troops high.Analysts believe Bajwa's announcement that the LoC situation would improve might be a reconciliatory gesture towards India. However, Gen Raheel was not so conciliatory in his final speech as the army chief, as he cautioned India against adopting an aggressive stance in Kashmir. Raheel, 60, said in recent months "India's increasing terrorism and aggressive stance" in Kashmir have "endangered" the region."India should know that mistaking our policy of patience for weakness would be dangerous," he said."This is reality, that in South Asia, lasting peace and progress is impossible without solution of Kashmir issue. For that, international community's special attention is necessary," he said. He also stressed the need for institutions to work together for nation's progress.PTI

Can anyone become VC," bench comprising Chief Justice TS Thakur and justices D Y Chandrachud and L Nageswara Rao said. The bench took strong note of the submisison of senior advocate Raju Ramachandran that an eminent person can be shortlisted and appointed as the VC. Buttressing his argument, Ramachandran also referred to Vice President Hamid Ansari, a career diplomat, and said that being an eminent person, he was appointed the VC of the university during 2000-02. "Distinguished civil servants, army generals, diplomats have held this post at the central university under the criteria of eminent person," he said. Does it mean "a singer, a sportsman, a musician," can be selected as the V-C, bench asked. AMU said there has been tradition to appoint eminent persons to the post. New Delhi:Zakir Naik has lashed out at the Modi govt terming it ‘anti-Muslim’ and alleged ban on his NGO IRF is ‘politically motivated’. Naik, however, emphasized that he has repeatedly offered his cooperation to Central agencies in their investigations and has justified his decision to steer clear of India saying that he was an NRI and that his work kept him away mostly, a report said. “I’ve repeatedly offered my cooperation to govt al agencies in their investigations. Till a few days ago, no agency bothered to contact me, ask me questions, send me any notice or even lodge an FIR against me. Till date there’s been no contact and the only FIR lodged against me was done after the ban,” Naik said.Speaking to ANI, Naik said that he will challenge the ban even as his legal team in Delhi and Mumbai has been considering all options possible. Responding to a query as to why he accused the PM Modi govt for the ban and not British PM Theresa May, Naik said, “I am not banned in the UK, I have been ‘excluded’, which means I cannot enter UK A ban would have meant banning my speeches on television, my NGO as well as my books, audio and video CDs. None of that has happened. My organization and my published materials are very much in circulation in UK and doing some commendable work in spreading the message of peace in Islam.”Rejecting reports that he was granted Malaysian citizenship, Naik said he has neither been banned in Malaysia nor does he have its citizenship. “Indian media has repeated hundreds of times in the last 4 months that I was banned in Malaysia.I’m neither banned in Malaysia nor do I have its citizenship,” he said.ANI /FE

Trillions of dollars from Gulf to enter India through Islamic Banking: ICIF

Mumbai: RBI's proposal to open up "Islamic window" in conventional banks will lead to trillions of dollars from Gulf nations getting invested in India, said an organisation pushing for Islamic financial banking.Indian Centre for Islamic Finance (ICIF) said if the RBI proposal becomes a reality, huge investments from countries like UAE, Qatar and Bahrain will flow into India."There are various sovereign funds in Gulf countries with trillions of dollars waiting to invest in India. Introduction of Islamic banking will give a green signal to people in nations like UAE, Qatar and Bahrain to invest here," ICIF General Secretary H Abdur Raqeeb told PTI. "In 2008, when Raghuram Rajan (who later became RBI Governor) headed a high-level committee on financial sector reforms, we met him and conveyed our concern about exclusion of Muslims from financial system."We pressed for their inclusion in the sector. According to the Sachar Committee report, Muslim-majority areas are described as 'negative zone' by banks," said Raqeeb, whose organisation is spearheading campaign for introduction of interest-free Islamic financial banking in the country. Citing various studies, he said Muslims prefer to invest in real estate, gold, spending lavishly or even depositing in banks without withdrawing the principle amount to avoid interest. He said no amendments would be required in the existing Act for introduction of Islamic banking and a notification by the Centre would suffice.PTI

If bypolls and civic polls are a referendum on demonetisation, then it looks as if PM Narendra Modi's gamble is paying off despite the chaos and suffering unleashed due to shoddy execution. Tens days after Modi announced that his govt was scrapping the Rs.500 and Rs.1000 notes in order to curb black money and corruption, BJP scored major victories in MP, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, while performing well in West Bengal and Tripura. 3 weeks into demonetisation, BJP has swept the civic polls in Maharashtra and Gujarat, and once again its leaders are saying that these results prove that public sentiment is behind the BJP. Out of the 126 seats being contested in the Gujarat civic polls, the BJP has won 109 seats, taking 40 seats from the Congress Party, which managed only 17 seats. In Maharashtra, BJP won 52 out of 147 municipal councils followed by the Shiv Sena (25), the Congress Party (22) and NCP (17).In Maharashtra, the BJP seat tally went up from 396 in the 2011 civic polls to 851, the Congress Party's tally went down from 1,111 to less than 700, according to local reports."Opposition is observing Aakrosh Diwas and Bharat Bandh, on the other hand BJP is winning elections everywhere," BJP President Amit Shah said at a political rally in Maharganj in Uttar Pradesh. huffingtonpost

Ahmedabad: Gujarat high court permitted a 19-year-old Hindu girl to live-in with her Muslim boyfriend, who is just 20 years old and is currently ineligible for marriage. While allowing this reunion to take place on the wishes of the girl in a remote town of Dhanera in the border district of Banaskantha, a bench of Justice Akil Kureshi and Justice Biren Vaishnav observed, "Our society puts considerable stress on the institution of marriage and its sanctity. Instances of live-in relationship are largely confined to metro cities and other urban centres. Despite this, we must recognize our legal limitation in forcing an adult person of sound mind to stay at a place she does not want. Correspondingly, we also must recognize that we do not have the power to prevent the girl who is 19 years of age and is of sound mind from exercising her choice and joining the petitioner (her boyfriend), if she so desires." timesofindia

Mysuru: Rationalist and litterateur KS Bhagawan said a section of people without any knowledge about Mysuru ruler Tipu Sultan is making a rumpus in society by deliberately spreading false information. After inaugurating the seminar on 'Tipu Sultan - A Thought' organized by the Karnataka Dalit Welfare Trust , he said Tipu is more misunderstood than understood."A section of people is deliberately creating a rumpus and spreading fallacious opinions on Tipu, due to false notions. If he was a religious fanatic, the farmers of Srirangapatna would not have remained farmers. If he had such a narrow mind about converting people to Islam, he would have first converted the farmers of Srirangapatna," he said. timesofindia

Madhya Pradesh CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan has suggested that the 8 under-trials who were killed in an encounter in the city last month were termed "terrorists" because of the "perception" of their guilt. When asked why he termed the 8 SIMI men killed in the encounter at Acharpra as "durdant aatankwadi" (dreaded terrorists) when their trial was still on and they had not been held guilty by the court, Chouhan said: "...because of acts, perception is formed... acts in the past are known to society and the nation...."Without naming SIMI, he further said that "such people from whom there is threat....it is the duty to warn society and save people from them." The jailbreak in which a security personnel was killed and the encounter a few hours later, had hit national headlines.

Afghan Taliban offers 'security' for copper, gas projects
http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2016/11/taliban-offers-security-copper-gas-projects-161129131200604.html
The Taliban has offered to protect major govt projects such as the mining of a big copper deposit and an international natural gas pipeline project to assist the development and prosperity of war-torn Afghanistan. The insurgents have been behind much of the violence over the last 15 years that has frightened off investors, leaving Afghanistan unable to tap its vast natural resources and build the infrastructure necessary to wean itself off foreign aid.The armed group, which calls itself the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, maintains its fight is against foreign military forces and the foreign-backed govt , not ordinary Afghans."Islamic Emirate not only backs all national projects which are in the interest of the people and result in the development and prosperity of the nation but are also committed to safeguarding them," the Taliban said in a statement."Emirate directs all its mujahideen to help in the security of all national projects that are in the higher interest of Islam and the country."The fighters identified the $3bn Mes Aynak copper deposit in Logar province, near Kabul, as one project they would protect.A Chinese company was awarded the mining contract nine years ago, but has yet to start production because of poor security and a lack of transport infrastructure.Taliban also mentioned the $10bn Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India (TAPI) gas pipeline project, and a regional electricity-generation effort linking Central Asia and South Asia, known as CASA-1000.Taliban statement came a day after the official launch of a railway link with neighbouring Turkmenistan."We are waiting to see the Taliban turn their statements into practice," said palace spokesman Shah Hussain Murtazawi. Syria's rebels lost all of the northern neighbourhoods of their stronghold in east Aleppo on Monday, as the army made significant advances in its offensive to recapture the entire city. The govt gains have prompted an exodus of thousands of desperate civilians, some fleeing to districts held by the govt or Kurdish forces, others heading south into areas still under opposition control."The situation is disastrous," said Ibrahim Abu Al-Leith, a spokesman for the White Helmets rescue group in the Ansari neighbourhood."There is mass displacement and morale is in the gutter," he said, his voice cracking with emotion."People are sleeping in the streets. They don't have anything to eat or drink, but neither do we," he told AFP.UN humanitarian envoy Stephen O'Brien said on Tuesday initial reports indicated that up to 16,000 people have been displaced by fighting in the city over the past few days. aljazeera

http://www.firstpost.com/world/islamic-state-arrests-shopkeepers-for-hiking-prices-in-nearly-besieged-mosul-reuters-3128756.html
Mosul: IS has arrested dozens of Mosul shop owners accused of raising food prices in the nearly besieged city, to tamp down discontent as a US-backed offensive closes in on the group's last major stronghold in Iraq, residents said on Monday. The arrests took place on Sunday morning in Bursa, a commercial district in the western part of the city, said a witness who asked not be identified as Islamic State punishes with death those caught communicating with the outside world.About 30 shop owners in the area were arrested and taken away blindfolded to unknown destinations, he said. Most of the people executed previously in Mosul were former police and army officers, suspected of disloyalty or plotting rebellions against the militants' rule. The arrest of the shop owners is meant as a warning to retailers to refrain from price hikes that would cause unrest in the city. Some 100,000 Iraqi govt troops, Kurdish security forces and mainly Shi'ite militiamen are participating in the assault on Mosul, with air and ground support from a US-led international military coalition.
