Ahmedabad: Gujarat High Court today acquitted 14 persons out of a total of 31 who were convicted by special court in 2011 in Sardarpura massacre of 2002 post Godhra riots. The court upheld appeals by 14 Hindus convicted over the massacre of 33 Muslims burnt alive during some of the worst religious unrest the country has seen since independence. The victims had crowded into a small house seeking shelter during a wave of anti-Muslim violence in Gujarat in 2002.The rioters set the house alight, killing 28 people on the spot. Another 5 later died of their injuries. While upholding the conviction of 17 remaining convicts, the court dismissed the appeal petitions of state govt , Supreme Court appointed-SIT and victims who had challenged the acquittal of 31 accused by the special court. There were 62 accused in the case. Out of them, 31 were convicted for life imprisonment and the remaining were pleaded not guilty. The division bench of justice Harsha Devani and justice Biren Vaishnav pronounced the order acquitting 14 persons from the 31 convicts. Senior lawyer Yogesh Lakhani who represented the convicts said that out of 14, the three have been given “clean acquittal while 11 were acquitted on benefit of doubt.” He said that detailed order will available post Diwali vacation. It was the first post Godhra riots case in Gujarat out of nine cases which were probed by SIT on which the verdict was pronounced.Gujarat govt  was accused of tacitly supporting the attacks, and survivors of the Sardarpura massacre said it could have been avoided if the police had arrived on time.“We were shouting, pleading and begging. But no one came to our help, not even the police,” Bifu Mia told AFP.Indian Express/ AFP

3.2 million debit cards compromised; SBI, HDFC Bank, ICICI, YES Bank and Axis worst hit
http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/industry/banking/finance/banking/3-2-million-debit-cards-compromised-sbi-hdfc-bank-icici-yes-bank-and-axis-worst-hit/articleshow/54945561.cms
MUMBAI: Banks in India will either replace or ask users to change the security codes of as many as 3.2 million debit cards in what's emerging as one of the biggest ever breaches of financial data in India, people aware of the matter said. Several victims have reported unauthorised usage from locations in China. Of the cards, 2.6 million are said to be on the Visa and Master-Card platform and 600,000 on the RuPay platform. Worst-hit of the card-issuing banks are State Bank of India, HDFC BankBSE -0.44 %, ICICI BankBSE 4.06 %, YES Bank and Axis Bank, the people said. The breach is said to have originated in malware introduced in systems of Hitachi Payment Services, enabling fraudsters to steal information allowing them to steal funds. Hitachi, which provides ATM, point of sale (PoS) and other services, couldn't be reached for comment late Wednesday. A forensic audit has now been ordered by Payments Council of India on Indian bank servers and systems to detect the origin of frauds that might have hit customer accounts. NPCI Managing Director AP Hota said: "We have received complaints from banks about debit cards being used in China which aroused suspicion." "Though most of the suspected fraudulent transactions happened in the Visa and MasterCard network, we thought a whole a forensic audit of entire network will help us find out where the compromise happened," he said. TOI had reported on Wednesday that SBI would reissue 600,000 debit cards following a malware-related security breach. SBI has asked customers to change their PIN numbers as well. "Based on the complaints we have received, we are suspecting a compromise on the non-SBI ATM network which could include various white-label ATM service providers," SBI Chief Information Officer Mrutyunjay Mahapatra told ET. HDFC Bank said it had already taken action in the matter a few weeks back. "Besides advising those customers who we know have used a non-HDFC Bank ATM in the recent past to change (their) ATM PIN, we are advising our customers to use only HDFC Bank ATMs as we believe security controls at some of the other bank ATMs may not be at par with HDFC Bank ATMs," a spokesperson said. "We take this opportunity to reiterate that it's always prudent to change ATM PINs from time to time. It prevents misuse." Economic Times /TOI

New Delhi: While India respects freedom of religion and faith, “unreasonable or discriminatory” practises cannot be held integral to it and protected, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said today defending the Centre’s stand on triple talaq amid a raging debate on the contentious issue. He cited the practice of “untouchability” to assert that religious practices need to be in accord with constitutional values and emphasised that “gender justice, gender equality and gender dignity” were at the core of the Modi govt ’s priority.“…we respect freedom of religion and freedom of faith which are protected by fundamental rights. But every unreasonable or discriminatory practice cannot be held integral to faith….“For instance, can anyone claim that untouchability against Dalits flows from my faith and I can practice it.Therefore, religious practices also need to be in accord with the constitutional values,” he said. “This whole apprehension that we are bringing uniform civil code or it is an agenda is completely baseless. 2need not be linked at all. Law Commission is examining it and let there be a widest consultation possible by all the stakeholders,” he said.PTI

Also, men should be made aware of the problems that he could face in case of a divorce."Stating that Islam has always shown the path of equality for women, he said, "As of now, women have the right to take divorce... not give it.... giving them right to give divorce would take its principle of equality further."Talking about the role of govt  in triple talaq, he said, "Islam is a complete religion in itself. Govt interference in the shariat law is not welcome. Also, matters related to shariat are better understood by religious leaders and not politicians." Maulana Sadiq also said that triple talaq was a matter related to the sunni community while shias have always opposed it. TOI

With BJP eying to achieve majority on its own in the 2017 UP Assembly polls, his comments may give the opposition parties fresh ammunition to target ruling party at the Centre. “Development is necessary to win election in the nation but it is not everything. To win the elections, it is important to focus on our priority. Conspiracy played against us in the past was to divide the Hindus and unite the minorities. But this time we will do just the opposite, we will unite the Hindus and will divide the minorities as much as possible,” Swamy told ANI.BJP leader also said it is impossible that the Ram Temple issue does not attract eyeballs at a time when election is scheduled to take place in UP. Impact of neta-cleric nexus on polls worth studying: SC
http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/politics-and-nation/impact-of-neta-cleric-nexus-on-polls-worth-studying-supreme-court/articleshow/54952956.cms
New Delhi: Signalling trouble for political parties that rush to religious leaders ahead of polls to seek support of their followers, the Supreme Court on Wednesday said it would be worth examining the candidate-religious heads nexus and its 'corrupting' influence on votes.  At present, this important aspect of election does not come within the ambit of Section 123(3) of the Representation of the People Act, which provides for disqualification of a candidate if he, his agent or someone with his consent uses religion, caste, community or language to garner electoral benefits. A constitution bench comprising Chief Justice TS Thakur and Justices Madan B Lokur, SA Bobde, Adarsh K Goel, UU Lalit, DY Chandrachud and LN Rao indicated that many candidates try to step around the disqualification norm by not sharing a stage with religious leaders, who in turn give an impression that they were independently asking their supporters to vote for a particular candidate or party. “If a religious leader, saint or cleric records a statement canvassing vote in the name of religion for a particular candidate or political party and that is played at election rallies of the candidate or political party, will it fall foul of Section 123(3) of RP Act,“ the bench asked. Bahjoi (Sambhal): After Mayawati's direct appeal to Muslims, BSP cadres are now using verses from Quran and Hadees and invoking Muslim past as rulers to keep them away from SP and Congress. "Your Hadees says that a group of travellers need a Qaid (leader) to reach their destination...Dalits have followed this teaching and followed one leader. The community that was slave for 5,000 years became king following your Hadees," Atar Singh Rao, a legislator and BSP's zonal coordinator for western UP, tells the Muslim gathering waiting to hear general secretary Naseemuddin Siddiqui in Bahjoi on Wednesday.  He also reminds Muslims that Red Fort, Qutub Minar and Taj Mahal stand testimony of their your royal lineage. Rao, subsequently, refers to Naseemuddin as a potential "Qaid", reminding the crowd how he virtually shared equal power with Mayawati as "a minister with 18 portfolios". Siddiqui's son, Afzal, who is handling the BSP Muslim outreach ensures that meeting starts with recitation of verses from Quran.economictimes

http://www.freepressjournal.in/ujjain/ujjain-hindu-organisations-stage-dharna-over-illegal-construction-at-masjid/958284
Ujjain: Samagra Hindu Samaj along with many Hindu organisations staged a ‘dharna’ on Wednesday under the leadership of VHP leader and head of Samagra Hindu Samaj Kuldeepak Joshi, against the construction work at Topwali masjid adjoining the main road to Mahakal temple. Due to the festive season and sensitivity of the matter, the police had put a stop to the construction. Hindu outfits raised the point that the open land belonged to the govt and no illegal construction could be done on it to which Manjoor Aahmed sadar of the mosque countered that the land belonged to the mosque and no dispute should be raised in this regard. free press journal
MP cops accuse govt of shielding unruly RSS members
http://www.hindustantimes.com/bhopal/mp-cops-accuse-govt -of-shielding-unruly-rss-members/story-lh85U5nCNq4hrUJYHFKlqI.html
Balaghat: Millions across India may be cheering the onset of the festive season but there is gloom in the police barracks in Madhya Pradesh. Dejected cops say the morale of the force is low as the govt  has sided with the RSS and punished police officers who take any action against the Hindu group members. An example of this alleged favouritism played out around two weeks ago, when a senior RSS leader Suresh Yadav accused police of thrashing him in custody. A medical report ruled out life-threatening injuries but state govt charged 10 policemen with attempt-to-murder, triggering widespread anger among the forces. The case has now turned into a full-blown political war following the transfer of two senior officers for “wrongly handling the case”. Congress says BJP administration is acting on behalf of its ideological parent, RSS, and demoralising police — a charge many in the force agree with. “This is a real sad series of events. But, we cannot do anything as the decisions are being taken at the highest political levels,” police official said, requesting anonymity. Another police officer said force had become victims of govt’s bid to appease the RSS.HT

Jhabua/Dhar: Under pressure from RSS and BJP workers at Petlawad in Jhabua and Gandhwani in Dhar, MP police shifted Petlawad and Manawar sub-divisional officers (police) and attached them to IG’s office in Indore on Tuesday.Action is reminiscent of the Balaghat episode in which the govt  transferred an IGP and the SP and suspended an additional SP, a town inspector and eight other policemen for allegedly thrashing RSS worker Suresh Yadav. At Petlawad in Jhabua district, SDOP Rakesh Vyas and police station in-charge Karni Singh Saktawat were attached to the IG’s office in Indore.HT

Bisada: The condolence ceremony of Ravin Sisodiya, an accused in the Dadri lynching case, who had died in judicial custody on Oc.4, was held peacefully on Wednesday. Family members said they requested those who wanted to politicise the ceremony to stay away. In a show of communal unity in the village where communal tension has been on the rise, Muslim friends of Ravin’s family also attended condolence ceremony. Taaj Mohammad, who was sitting with Ravin’s uncle and relatives at the ceremony, said that villagers were united.“I live in a nearby village and run a brick supply business. Almost the entire village knows me as I am one of the few suppliers in this area. I have no fear walking in any lane of the village. There is no communal tension in the area,” Taaj said.“In the last one year, the perception of this village has changed. Reports of communal tensions are untrue. Hindus and Muslims are friends here. They cannot and they will never turn against each other,” he said. Besides Mohammad, Arif Jamaal, a painter-contractor from a neighbouring village had also joined the ceremony. However, his family said they don’t want ‘outsiders’ to gain politically from his death. HT

Families inside Iraq's Mosul say they are living in fear and desperation as the military operation to retake the city from the ISIL pushes on.  Speaking to Al Jazeera on the phone from inside Mosul, Abu Yazan, 36, who didn't want his real name used fearing reprisals from the group also known as ISIS, said fleeing the city was "not possible" at this stage."There is no way out for us as families. Even if we think about fleeing the city, that is not possible at the time being. We are being held hostages; ISIL took the whole city of Mosul as hostage," said the father of three children.Yazan is one of 1.5 million civilians trapped inside the city. As Iraqi, Kurdish and coalition forces push into the city, international aid agencies have warned of the potential consequences on civilian lives.Although much of the threat comes from ISIL fighters, human rights organisations have found civilians are also vulnerable to mistreatment by the Iraqi army and the state-sponsored Popular Mobilisation Units.

IS keeps its sights on the ‘longer fight’: NYT
http://www.thehindu.com/news/international/is-keeps-its-sights-on-the-longer-fight/article9241558.ece
Beirut: Islamic State leaders had long promised their followers an apocalyptic battle — foretold, some believe, by the Prophet Muhammad — in an otherwise nondescript village they controlled in northern Syria. But the warriors of the self-declared caliphate lost the village, Dabiq, in just a few hours over the weekend as Syrian rebels, backed by Turkey, closed in. To soften the symbolic blow, the Islamic State switched rhetorical gears, declaring that the real Dabiq battle would come some other time. The about-face was part of a larger repositioning as the IS loses ground, not only in Syria but also in Iraq. On the defensive in both countries, the group has been making preparations for retrenchment and survival. Hundreds of IS fighters and their families have fled to the group’s de facto capital, the northern Syrian city of Raqqa, in recent days, according to several residents of that city. NYT
