http://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-news-india/avoid-war-hold-dialogue-to-resolve-disputes-muslim-body-to-govt-3060268/
New Delhi: Condemning the Uri terror attack, an Islamic body today urged the Centre to take all possible steps to avoid war with Pakistan and suggested that the two sides hold dialogue to resolve the disputes. Addressing a press conference, office-bearers of Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) also flagged concerns over alleged slow pace of probe in the Mewat double murder and gangrape incident as it claimed that the handling of the case indicates the Haryana govt is “shielding” culprits. It also hit out at the BJP govt in Assam over its anti-illegal immigrant drive, alleging that the members of the Muslim community there are being harassed in the name of the initiative. “We strongly condemn the (Uri) terror attack and death of the soldiers. (But) both India and Pakistan must show wisdom and sincerity using path of dialogue and consultation in order to resolve their issues.”“War is not a panacea for our problems. India must take all steps to avoid war with Pakistan,” JIH president Maulana Syed Jalaluddin Umari told reporters, according to a statement. He also asked the govt to devise ways to curb breach of security “like it happened in the Uri incident”. Further targeting the Haryana govt over the Mewat incident, he alleged that the handling of the case suggests the Manohar Lal Khattar dispensation is “trying to shield culprits and side with a particular community”. JIH secretary general Muhammad Salim Engineer, who also briefed the press, voiced concerns over Assam government’s anti-illegal immigrant drive and claimed many community members have been put in jail without proper probe. ‘Drama exposed’: Pakistan media questions India’s surgical strikes across LoC
http://www.hindustantimes.com/world-news/india-s-drama-exposed-pakistan-media-questions-surgical-strikes/story-8bNQNsa1l4IxaWeL09iXyM.html
Islamabad: A visit to areas along the Line of Control arranged for journalists by the Pakistan Army dominated the front pages of newspapers in that country on Sunday, with military officials saying there was “no evidence” of India’s surgical strikes.Urdu Daily Jang, country’s largest circulated newspaper, led with the headline “India’s drama exposed”, while the headline of another paper, the right-wing Daily Ummat, screamed “Bharat’s lies and falsehoods exposed”. English newspapers too led with the same story. The Express Tribune headlined its report, “Journalists flown to debunk Indian myth”.Journalists were shown different points at the LoC and given a briefing by the Inter-Services Public Relations, after which many reported that they were satisfied, based on their interviews with local residents and military officials, that no surgical strikes had taken place as claimed by India.Other commentators focussed on the larger picture. In his column on Sunday in the influential Dawn newspaper, human rights defender IA Rehman wrote that PM Nawaz Sharif has perhaps done all that he could to draw the international community’s attention to the Kashmiri people’s ordeal.Sharif and members of his large entourage spoke of the situation in Kashmir to whoever they met in New York on the sidelines of UN General Assembly. By all accounts offered by Pakistan’s media, the Kashmir mission, carried out with unusual vigour, went off well — this despite a slight slip while drafting the press release on the meeting with US secretary of State John Kerry, and the attempt by Pakistan’s enemies to sabotage its efforts by attacking the Indian military camp at Uri, Rehman wrote.Rehman added, however, “But was the world listening?” He said the question is unavoidable in view of, among other things, the world community’s decision some years ago to delete the Kashmir issue from the list of its concerns. The article was extensively shared online.HT

http://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-news-india/nda-govt-creating-war-hysteria-for-up-polls-punjab-congress-chief-amarinder-singh-3061677/
Budhlada:Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh on Sunday disapproved of the evacuation of people from the border areas of the state, alleging BJP-led NDA govt at the Centre is creating “unnecessary war hysteria and tension” with an eye on UP Assembly elections. “Our army is staying at peace time zones and our villages are being uprooted. Punjabis are being made scapegoats for next year’s UP polls, as BJP has been unable to establish any foothold there so far,” he claimed. “When there are not even remote signs of war, why uproot poor farmers and that too at a time when their crops are ready for harvest?” Amarinder asked. Asserting that as of now, there are no signs of war which would necessitate their relocation or evacuation to safer areas, he appealed to villagers along the border areas not to leave and said he will join them soon. Amarinder claimed that there were no troop movements on the either side of the border after the surgical strike by the Indian Army on terror launch pads across the LoC.PTI

Pak’s friend China blocks Brahmaputra tributary

New Delhi: Days after India reviewed its use of water under the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan, China announced that it had blocked a tributary of the Brahmaputra to facilitate work on one of its "most expensive" hydropower projects in Tibet. While the announcement by China's official news agency Xinhua in an article might be intended to only give India a scare, the development is sure to raise hackles here as diversion of Brahmaputra waters remains an emotive, volatile issue in India's northeast, particularly Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. Lalho project on the Xiabuqu river, a Brahmaputra tributary, at Xigaze in Tibet entails an investment of $740 million. Govt sources said they were still checking if this would have any impact on the flow of water into India.Beijing doesn't have a pact with any of the lower riparians. India and China did sign an MoU in 2013 but Indian officials said Beijing has not always been open about sharing hydrological data.TOI
China snubs India again, blocks move to ban Masood Azhar at UN
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/China-snubs-India-again-blocks-move-to-ban-Masood-Azhar-at-UN/articleshow/54630724.cms
New Delhi: China on Saturday extended its technical "hold" on JeM chief Masood Azhar for a further 3 months in the UN Security Council's 1267 committee. The "hold" is on an international move to ban the JeM leader by UN.JeM as an organization is already on the proscribed list. But in March this year, China put a technical "hold" on the move to put sanctions on Azhar. The resolution to ban him was co-sponsored by the US, UK, France and India, with 14 other countries acquiescing. China was the only one to block it with a technical hold. In the past 6 months, India has lobbied with China to lift the hold. Confirming in Beijing, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said, "China always maintains that on the listing matter, 1267 committee should stick to the main principles of objectivity, impartiality and professionalism, base its judgments on solid evidence and decide upon consensus among the members of Security Council," he said in a written reply to a question. He added, ""There are still different views on India's listing application. Extended technical hold on it will allow more time for the committee to deliberate on the matter and for relevant parties to have further consultations."TOI

Patna:2 days after the Patna High Court quashed its order on prohibition, Bihar govt on Gandhi Jayanti Sunday came out with a new law banning liquor with more harsh provisions like arrest of all adults in the event of recovery of the contraband in their house. The govt notified the Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act, 2016 to ensure that the ban on sale and consumption of alcohol including Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) as well spiced and domestic liquor continued in the state. At a special Cabinet convened on Sunday, CM Nitish Kumar and other members of his Cabinet took a pledge that the govt would continue with prohibition which is “ushering positive social change” in the state.Besides retaining many provisions of the previous one, the new liquor law has some more stringent provisions including enhancing duration of imprisonment, hiking amount of fine, arrest of all adults in case of recovery of liquor bottle from a house and collective fine on a place in case of habitual violation of prohibition. CM told reporters that the new liquor law, brought into force from today, would be a real tribute to the Father of the Nation when the state is readying to observe centenary celebration of Gandhiji’s Champaran Satyagraha against British rule from the state in early 2017.

Erdogan condemns US Congress 9/11 law
https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20161002-erdogan-condemns-us-congress-911-law/
Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan condemned Saturday a US Congress vote to override Barack Obama’s veto of a bill allowing 9/11 victims to sue Saudi Arabia, saying he expected the move to be reversed as soon as possible. Relations between Ankara and Riyadh have tightened considerably in the past months as they pursue joint interests in Syria. Erdogan had on Friday hosted Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Naiff for talks at his palace.“The allowing by the US Congress of lawsuits to be opened against Saudi Arabia over the 9/11 attacks is unfortunate,” Erdogan said in a speech for the opening of parliament. The visit by Saudi Crown Prince to Ankara was the latest sign of the burgeoning relationship between Turkey and Saudi. middleeastmonitor
