Gauri Lankesh murder: Pistol of same make as one used in killing of rationalists
http://indianexpress.com/article/india/gauri-lankesh-murder-cctv-footage-shows-man-wearing-helmet-firing-at-her-4832265/
Bengaluru: 3 of 4 bullets fired on journalist and activist Gauri Lankesh Tuesday night outside her residence in west Bengaluru by an unidentified assailant pierced her body while a fourth missed and its fragments were found in a wall of her home, investigations by Bengaluru police have revealed. A preliminary analysis of the four empty cartridges found at the site of the shooting of 55-year-old Lankesh has determined that a countrymade 7.65 mm pistol, which is commonly available, was used in the killing. A post-mortem examination carried out Wednesday morning by doctors at the Victoria Hospital has revealed three entry and three corresponding exit wounds on the body, sources associated with the forensic investigations said. “One bullet entered the body from behind the shoulder region and two bullets hit the abdomen from the front. There are entry wounds and corresponding exit wounds for each of the three bullets,’’ sources at the hospital said. 7.65 mm countrymade weapon used for the killing of the journalist is of the same kind as the weapons used in the killing of rationalist and Kannada scholar M M Kalburgi, 77, on Aug.30, 2015 at Dharwad, and those used in the murder of Maharashtra rationalists Govind Pansare, 81, in Kolhapur on Feb. 16, 2015 and Narendra Dabholkar in Pune on Aug.20, 2013.Forensic investigations of the cartridges and bullets recovered from the unsolved murders of Kalburgi, Pansare and Dabholkar have revealed that 7.65 mm pistol used to kill Kalburgi in 2015 was the same gun that was used to murder Pansare the same year. The forensic probe also revealed that one of two guns used to shoot Pansare was used to kill Dabholkar in 2013.indianexpress
HRW demands prompt probe in Gauri Lankesh’s murder
http://indianexpress.com/article/india/human-rights-watch-demands-prompt-probe-in-journalist-gauri-lankeshs-murder-4832728/
New York:A leading human rights organisation has called for prompt investigation into the killing of outspoken Indian journalist Gauri Lankesh, saying the “possibility” that it is a “politically motivated” shooting needs to be fully probed. Lankesh, known for her left-leaning outlook and forthright views on Hindutva politics, was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Bangalore.Human Rights Watch said Indian authorities should promptly act on the announced investigation into the killing by unidentified gunmen of Lankesh, an “outspoken journalist” who “campaigned for democracy, secularism, and civil liberties” and was a vocal critic of the Hindu nationalism. “The motives for Lankesh’s killing are not yet known, but the possibility of a politically motivated shooting needs to be fully and promptly investigated,” said Meenakshi Ganguly, South Asia director at Human Rights Watch. “Authorities in India need both to bring Lankesh’s killers to justice and to protect media freedom and the right to free expression,” she added.PTI

CBI SP probing Dhabolkar murder, AAP leader Ashish Khetan on Sanatan ‘hit-list’
http://indianexpress.com/article/india/ashish-khetan-cbi-sp-on-sanatan-radar-4832209/
Mumbai: Between June 2016 and July this year, AAP leader and former journalist Ashish Khetan allegedly received two threat letters from Hindu group Sanatan Sanstha. Khetan had earlier filed a writ petition in the Delhi court seeking uniform guidelines or Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) that could be followed by law enforcement agencies in the country whenever a citizen is threatened by any extremist group. Now, sources have told Indian Express that the investigating officer in the Pune-based rationalist Narendra Dabholkar’s murder case is also on the “radar” of the right wing group.Nandakumar Nair, the Superintendent of Police with CB) who arrested Sanatan Sanstha’s Dr Virendra Tawde, an alleged western commander of Hindu Janajagruti Samiti (HJS), an offshoot of the Sanatan Sanstha, in June 2016 for being the conspirator in the Dabholkar murder case has been identified as a “rakshasa” (demon) by the Sanstha. In its chargesheet against Tawde filed last year, the CBI had stated that “rakshasa” was a code used by Sanstha members to address people on their “hit-list”.With the Karnataka Police probing if the murder of senior journalist Gauri Lankesh had any link to the murder of three rationalists — Narendra Dabholkar, Govind Pansare and MM Kalburgi — these threat perceptions have gained prominence. “Recently, when Sanatan Sanstha lawyer Sajeev Punalekar was questioned by the CBI in connection with the case, a Sanatan functionary informed Nair that they were aware of his recent trip to the Guruvayur Sri Vishnu temple in Kerala. This clearly indicates that the group is monitoring his movements,” said an official. When asked if the officer has sought any protection from the Maharashtra police as his office is located in Navi Mumbai, the official said that from the very beginning, Sanatan addressed him as a “demon”.Indian Express

New Delhi:The anger over the killing of Gauri Lankesh is evident on Twitter where a large number of users have started blocking PM  Narendra Modi's personal handle in protest against him following abusive trolls, including one who called the Kannada journalist-activist "a bitch" who deserved to die. Nikhil Dadhich, who claims to be a garment manufacturer on his Twitter profile, posted a tweet shortly after the Tuesday night murder that used an abusive reference to the slain journalist. "Ek kuttiya kutte ki maut kya mari, saare pille ek sur mein bilbila rahe hain" (It took a bitch to die a dog's death, for all pups to howl in the same tune)," he said.Dadhich's Twitter account is followed by many political leaders from the right-wing BJP including Modi, which prompted many to ask why he was following such people, and demanded an unfollowing and apology. Since Wednesday however, #BlockNarendraModi appeared on the microblogging site and was the top trend when this story was written. Most users, while blocking the PM, tagged one Dr Rakesh Parikh (@drrakeshparikh) who they said came up with the idea. Dr Parikh's bio on Twitter says he is a "Diabetologist, Clinical Researcher, Blogger, Social Activist. Ex-Politician - have been active in Anti Corruption movement and then founder member of AAP".IndiaToday

1993 Mumbai blasts case: Abu Salem spared the gallows by extradition laws; Tahir Merchant, Feroz Khan get death
http://www.firstpost.com/india/1993-mumbai-blasts-case-tada-court-awards-life-to-abu-salem-feroz-khan-tahir-merchant-get-death-sentence-4018373.html
24 years after the deadly Mumbai blasts that left 257 people dead, a special TADA court on Thursday awarded death penalty to two convicts, life sentences to two others — including gangster Abu Salem — while giving 10 years in jail to one accused in the 1993 case.Special Judge GA Sanap pronounced the death verdicts on convicts Mohammed Tahir Merchant and Feroz Khan for their role in the blasts, said Special Public Prosecutor Deepak Salve.Besides Salem, the Special Court awarded life sentence to Karimullah Khan and 10 years rigorous imprisonment to the fifth convict, Riyaz Siddiqui.A special TADA court had in June convicted six persons, including mastermind Mustafa Dossa and Salem, in the blasts case. It, however, let off accused Abdul Qayyum, for want of evidence. This was the second leg of the trial. The attacks were allegedly carried out by one of India's most wanted men, Dawood Ibrahim, and his accomplice Tiger Memon to avenge Muslim deaths during the Hindu-Muslim riots that had rocked Mumbai a few months earlier.Tiger was awarded the death penalty by a TADA court on 27 July, 2007. He, however, is still in Pakistan as media reports suggest and India is still clueless about the whereabouts of Dawood. All the 7 accused faced multiple charges which included criminal conspiracy, waging war against the Govt  of India and murder. The trial of Salem, Mustafa Dossa, Karimullah Khan, Feroz Abdul Rashid Khan, Riyaz Siddiqui, Tahir Merchant and Abdul Quayyum was separated from the main case as they were arrested subsequently. firstpost

Kolkata: A few weeks ago, Hasu Sheikh would have had no problem telling his first wife to clear out of their house at Sultanganj in Malda district after marrying another woman from the same locality. However, with the Supreme Court closing that avenue on Aug. 22 through a verdict against triple talaq, he found himself resorting to a simpler – albeit more brutal – way of ensuring that she doesn’t become an obstacle on his path to renewed marital bliss. Sheikh chopped off 38-year-old Meno Bibi’s nose with a sickle on Wednesday night, 15 days after he entered into a marital alliance with his second wife. A complaint was lodged against Sheikh and six others at the Kaliachak police station soon after the incident. Bibi was admitted to the Malda Medical College and Hospital, where she is recuperating.According to Nakibuddin Gazi, a neighbour, Sheikh had entered into an extra-marital relationship with another woman from the same area about a year ago. Late last month, he married the woman and brought her to his house much to Bibi’s indignation. The quarrels intensified as the days passed, with Bibi flatly refusing to give in to their demands that she and her children leave the house. Sheikh and Afel – the son of his new wife – even beat her up on a few occasions. “My husband didn’t divorce me. He simply went ahead and married a woman, ignoring my objections,” she said from her hospital bed. “He doesn’t want to take care of my children anymore. I want stringent punishment for him and the others who attacked me.”

Some of those present in the meeting told ET that Bhagwat told them it was not right to suspect the intent of the Govt  and that, at times, political situations demanded certain things of leaders.“He was clear that those at the helm of the Govt  want the best for the country and as members of the same organisation, we must trust them and not question their commitment to the country or its culture,” a participant told ET.
Strong criticism of govt isn’t defamatory or seditious, says SC, underlines 1962 verdict

New Delhi : The Supreme Court has asserted that “making a strong criticism of the Govt ” is not even defamatory, let alone seditious. The court also directed all authorities, including police and trial judges, to follow its Constitution Bench ruling which stated that only incitement to violence and public disorder could form the basis of a sedition charge.A bench of Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Uday U Lalit maintained that it would not be within the fold of criminal jurisprudence to issue uniform guidelines for registration of FIRs under sedition charge, but underscored that a larger bench has already provided necessary safeguards that should be followed by all authorities.“Suppose somebody makes a strong criticism of the Govt … even a case of criminal defamation cannot be filed, let alone a case of sedition. Every magistrate is bound by what we said in the Kedar Nath (case),” said the bench. Indian Express

Pak army chief slams US, India; says will continue to support Kashmir

New Delhi:Days after BRICS declaration condemning Pakistan-based terror groups, the country's army chief Qamar Bajwa said Pakistan would "continue to extend political, moral, and diplomatic support for Kashmiris' right to self-determination", reported Pakistani media.Bajwa said, on the one hand, that "Kashmir does not need interference from Pakistan", and then on the other hand, that Pakistan would continue to support the people of the northern Indian state. His comments came days after India issued a demarche to Pakistan over the infiltration of a group of Pakistan-based terrorists from the Jaish-e-Muhammed who killed eight security personnel in Jammu and Kashmir's Pulwama district last month. The Jaish-e-Muhammed was one of the terror groups the BRICS countries named.Still, Bajwa said Pakistan will continue to support Kashmir."India should realise that the peaceful struggle of hundreds of thousands of youth in Kashmir does not need interference from Pakistan or Azad Jammu and Kashmir. It is in India's favour that they prioritise political and diplomatic solutions for sustainable resolution of the Kashmir issue instead of insulting Pakistan and using force against Kashmiris," said Bajwa, in an address on Pakistan's Defence Day. Pak army chief then said, referring to India, that "a neighbouring country...is high on power". He also blamed India for going nuclear.TOI

New Delhi:The failure to stop dodgy cash coming back into the banking system after demonetisation has likely burdened the Reserve Bank of India with additional interest payments running into tens of thousands of crores, former central bank governor Raghuram Rajan said on Thursday.Latest RBI data shows that all but 1% of the high-value bank notes demonetised have returned to the banking system, meaning black money hoarders found ways to legitimise their cash that now earns interests. Rajan estimates this burden could be as high as Rs 25,000 crore a year.“One of the costs which people haven’t paid enough attention to is (that) this was money sitting, if you believe it was black money, it was sitting in people’s safes or in their basement. It wasn’t earning any interest,” Rajan said, referring to short-term economic costs of demonetisation. hindustantimes

Violence could lead to exodus of 300,000 Rohingya: UN
http://www.aljazeera.com/news/2017/09/violence-lead-exodus-300000-rohingya-170907024358023.html
As many as 300,000 Rohingya Muslims could flee violence in northwestern Myanmar to neighbouring Bangladesh, UN officials say, warning of a funding shortfall for emergency food supplies for the desperate refugees.According to estimates issued by UN workers in Bangladesh's border region of Cox's Bazar, arrivals since the latest bloodshed started two weeks ago have already reached 146,000.Numbers are difficult to establish with any certainty because of the turmoil as Rohingya escape operations by Myanmar's military. However, UN officials have raised their estimate of the total expected refugees from 120,000 to 300,000, said Dipayan Bhattacharyya, who is Bangladesh spokesman for the World Food Programme (WFP)."They are coming in nutritionally deprived, they have been cut off from a normal flow of food for possibly more than a month," he told Reuters news agency. "They were definitely visibly hungry, traumatised."The surge of refugees, many sick or wounded, has strained the resources of aid agencies and communities that are already helping hundreds of thousands displaced by previous waves of violence in Myanmar. Many have no shelter, and aid agencies are racing to provide clean water, sanitation and food.aljazeera

Thousands of people have signed an online petition calling for the Nobel committee to revoke Aung San Suu Kyi's peace prize over the Myanmar Govt 's treatment of its Rohingya Muslims. But the Norwegian Nobel committee has ruled out any such move, saying only that the work which led to the awarding of the prize was taken into account. The Change.Org petition has gathered over 365,000 signatures as of Thursday, reflecting growing outrage over a massive security sweep in Rakhine state by Myanmar forces after a series of deadly ambushes by Rohingya militants."De facto ruler of Myanmar Aung San Suu Kyi has done virtually nothing to stop this crime against humanity in her country," the petition says.In Oslo, Olav Njolstad, head of the Nobel Institute, said it was impossible to strip a Nobel laureate of an award once it has been bestowed."Neither Alfred Nobel's will nor the statutes of the Nobel Foundation provide for the possibility that a Nobel Prize - whether for physics, chemistry, medicine, literature or peace - can be revoked," he said."Only the efforts made by a laureate before the attribution of a prize are evaluated by the Nobel committee," he said, and not any subsequent actions.

New Delhi:Myanmar’s State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi said Thursday that it is a ‘little unreasonable’ to expect her Govt  to solve the crisis in conflict-prone Rakhine state in just 18 months. In recent weeks, Suu Kyi and her administration has been chastised by human rights advocates and global media for merely watching on as over 1 lakh Rohingya Muslims fled Rakhine for neighbouring Bangladesh in the event of an army crackdown.“This is the biggest challenge we have had to face. It is a little unreasonable to expect us to solve the issue in 18 months…the situation in Rakhine has been such since many decades. It goes back to pre-colonial times,” Suu Kyi told news agency ANI.Suu Kyi said her administration’s resources are ‘not as complete and adequate as we would like them to be.’“It is our duty to take care of our citizens and we will try our best…we want to make sure that everyone is entitled to the protection of the law,” Suu Kyi told ANI. “We have to decide how to differentiate terrorists from innocents. You in India would be well versed with this.”In her first public comments on the crisis, Suu Kyi was quoted Wednesday saying in a call with Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan that global sympathy for the Rohingya was being fuelled by “a huge iceberg of misinformation calculated to create a lot of problems between different communities and with the aim of promoting the interest of the terrorists”. But she said her Govt was committed to protecting all the people of the western state. indianexpress

Turkey's first lady and foreign minister are visiting Bangladesh to learn why about 164,000 ethnic Rohingya Muslims have fled from neighboring Myanmar in the past two weeks.First lady Emine Erdogan and Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu visited a refugee camp housing more than 50,000 people and talked with residents, including a young person with a bullet injury, about ongoing violence in Myanmar's Rakhine state. Bangladesh officials also briefed them on how they are attempting to provide shelter, food and health care to the huge numbers of refugees. The first lady told reporters that Turkey will do everything possible to help the Rohingya, and that her husband, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, would take up the issue at this month's UN General Assembly meeting. Many of Rohingya have said they are fleeing violence by Myanmar soldiers and Buddhist mobs in Rakhine.UN refugee agency says 164,000 Rohingya have flooded into Bangladesh since violence erupted in Myanmar on Aug. 25.The revised refugee number confirmed Thursday by UNHCR spokeswoman Vivian Tan was likely to go up further, with thousands still crossing the border every day.New fires are burning in a Myanmar village that had been abandoned by Rohingya Muslims, and where schoolbooks with text from the Quran were seen ripped and left on the ground. That intensifies doubts about Govt  claims that members of the persecuted minority have been destroying their own homes.Journalists on a Govt -controlled trip saw the fires Thursday in Gawdu Zara village in northern Rakhine state, from which some 146,000 Rohingya have fled since ethnic violence erupted about two weeks ago.AP

Syrian opposition has not won the war, insists UN envoy

The UN Special Envoy to Syria, Staffan de Mistura, said on Wednesday that the Syrian opposition has not won the war against Bashar Al-Assad. Speaking to reporters, he added that while the Syrian opposition “must accept it has failed to win the civil war… the Govt  cannot simply announce victory.”According to de Mistura, “For the opposition, the message is very clear: if they were planning to win the war, facts are proving that is not the case. So now it is time to win the peace.”Asked if he was implying that Assad had won, he said that he is not the one who records the history of the conflict. “Victory can only be if there is a sustainable political long-term solution. Otherwise instead of war, God forbid, we may see plenty of low intensity guerrilla activity going on for the next 10 years, and you will see no reconstruction, which is a very sad outcome of winning a war.” middleeastmonitor
Catalonia passes law for October 1 independence vote

Catalonia's parliament has passed a law paving the way for an October 1 referendum on whether to declare independence from Spain - a vote fiercely opposed by the central Govt  in Madrid. The so-called "referendum bill" was adopted on Wednesday by the regional parliament, which is controlled by pro-independence parties, with 72 votes in favour and 11 abstentions. Politicians who oppose independence for the wealthy northeastern region of Spain left the chamber before the vote. After the law passed, separatist legislators sang the region's anthem, "Els Segadors", which recalls a 1640 revolt in Catalonia against the Spanish monarchy.Xavier Garcia Albiol, the head of Catalan branch of the conservative Popular Party, accused the separatist politicians of wanting to cause Spain's "biggest institutional crisis" since a failed coup attempt in 1981 when armed civil guards took over parliament.
