Can't allow lives of Muslim women to be ruined by triple talaq: PM Modi
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/india/Cant-allow-lives-of-Muslim-women-to-be-ruined-by-triple-talaq-PM-Modi/articleshow/55029796.cms
Mahoba (UP): Joining the debate on triple talaq, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday opposed the practice among Muslims and in the same breath he condemned the prevalence of female feticide in Hindu society."Female feticide is a sin. So what if the sinner is a Hindu. My government has taken a number of steps (to stop this practice). Daughters, mothers, sisters should be protected. One should not consider religion. Mothers and sisters should be respected. We have raised the issue firmly."Now the issue of talaq has come up. Just like if any Hindu commits female feticide he will have to go to jail, similarly what is the crime of my Muslim sisters that some one says talaq over phone and her life is destroyed," he said addressing a "Maha Parivartan Rally" here in the Bundelkhand region in poll-bound Uttar Pradesh.Urging TV news channels to not turn triple talaq into an issue of Hindu versus Muslim or BJP versus other parties+ , Modi said that in its submission to the Supreme Court, the central government had clearly stated that there should not be any atrocity on women and there should be no discrimination on the basis of religion."In democracy, there should be discussion. The government has put forward its position. Those who want to digress from triple talaq are instigating people...in the country, lives of Muslim women cannot be allowed to be ruined by triple talaq," he said.In his speech, the Prime Minister asked the audience whether the rights of Muslim women should be protected or not and whether they should get equal rights or not?"Politics and elections have their own place but getting Muslim women their rights as per the Constitution is the responsibility of the government and the people of the country," he said.Asking the media to not turn the issue of triple talaq as a matter between the government and the opposition, Modi said, "Debate should be between knowledgeable persons from Muslim community knowing 'Quran'. In Muslim community, knowledgeable and progressive people are there. There are educated Muslim women who can put their views forth.""When you do TV debate do not turn it into Hindu-Muslim issues. Debate should be between those who want change in Muslim society and those who do not want 125 crore Indians to know what is the issue," the Prime Minister said.PTI

Centre 'politicising' triple talaq issue: Muslim women body says will not allow any interference in Muslim Personal Law
http://www.oneindia.com/india/centre-politicising-triple-talaq-issue-muslim-women-organisation-2242983.html
Jaipur: Alleging that the Central govt is "politicising" the triple talaq issue, Women India Movement, a social organisation of Muslim women, today said it would not allow any "interference" with Muslim Personal Law. "Central government is politicising the practice of triple talaq to gain advantage and polarise Hindu votes in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly election, which will not be accepted," National President of the organisation Yasmin Farooqui told reporters here. She alleged that it was the "conspiracy" of the Union government to "enforce" Uniform Civil Code for Muslims, which is a violation of right to freedom given by the Constitution. "Muslim women are ready for any sacrifice under the leadership of All India Muslim Personal Law Board if the government does not stop this interference," she said. State president of the organisation Mehrunissa Khan said the Centre should instead focus on providing education and basic amenities and eradicating other social evils, like liquor, in the country. Haji Ali Dargah to give complete access to women: The Hindu
http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/mumbai/haji-ali-dargah-to-give-complete-access-to-women/article9261182.ece?homepage=true
New Delhi: Haji Ali Dargah Trust on Monday conceded before the Supreme Court that it has resolved to allow women to enter the sanctum sanctorum of the famed dargah in Mumbai “at par with men”.In a hearing before a Bench led by Chief Justice of India TS Thakur, the Trust said it has come around and passed a resolution on Oct.11, 2016 to comply with a Bombay High Court judgment to give women equal access like men.“Is that not what Your Lordships wanted? Is this not progressive?” senior advocate Gopal Subramanium, representing the Trust, asked the Bench.Disposing off the challenge raised by the Trust against the High Court decision, the Supreme Court allowed the Trust two weeks' time to remove certain structural obstructions inside the dargah to give women unrestricted view of the sanctum sanctorum. The Bench directed that any "default or neglect" in compliance by the Trust can be raised before the High Court. The hearing however saw the court nudge the Trust on why it had separate entrances for men and women into the dargah.“There may be women who do not want separate entrances. Why do you have to distinguish between man and woman here?” Chief Justice Thakur queried.

China objects to US envoy’s visit to Arunachal

New Delhi/Beijing: China, on Monday, admonished the United States for sending its ambassador in India Richard Verma to Arunachal Pradesh, warning that a third party's meddling would only complicate the dispute between Beijing and New Delhi.Rebuffing China for the objection, India said on Monday that there was “nothing unusual” about his trip to a State that was an integral part of the country.“U.S. Ambassador visited Arunachal Pradesh, a State which is an integral part of the country to which he is accredited. There is nothing unusual in it,” External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Vikas Swarup said here.China claims more than 90,000 sq km (35,000 sq miles) of territory disputed by India in the eastern sector of the Himalayas. Much of that forms the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh, which China calls South Tibet. Verma posted photos on his Twitter account on October 21 of his recent trip to Arunachal Pradesh, thanking Indian officials for their “warm hospitality” and calling the region a “magical place.” thehindu

US troops, not Indian soldiers featured on BJP promotional posters in Varanasi
http://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-news-india/us-troops-not-indian-soldiers-featured-on-bjp-promotional-posters-in-varanasi-3100129/
Soldiers have again made an appearance on BJP’s promotional posters ahead of the crucial 2017 polls. A new poster of the BJP released in Varanasi in UP boasted a silhouetted image of soldiers from 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Screaming Eagles of US armed forces. The image has also famously appeared as a banner by the famed TV war series Band of Brothers. Notably, BJP has indirectly kept Uri terror attack in public discourse but it seems odd that Indian soldiers were not put on the posters, even if the Army’s responding surgical strikes operations are being projected as an achievement by the party. The image printed in the poster was apparently clicked in Iraq during American military operations and has no link to Indian armed forces. The poster which appeared in Mahanagar, Varanasi was put up apparently to welcome PM Narendra Modi in his Lok Sabha constituency, ahead of the UP Assembly polls in 2017. The poster features PM Modi, BJP chief Amit Shah and several local BJP leaders like Pradeep Agrahari, Naveen Kapoor and Maneesh Kapoor. indian express
UP elections: Wary of BJP, Muslims in wait and watch mode, may vote for BSP
http://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-news-india/up-elections-wary-of-bjp-muslims-in-wait-and-watch-mode-may-vote-for-bsp-3099462/
Lucknow: As Samajwadi Party looks heading for a split, Muslim community leaders have a message for its chief Mulayam Singh Yadav: end the family feud soon or our votes would end up with BSP in the next year’s Assembly polls, which in turn would help the BJP. Muslims are considered the traditional votebank of the Samajwadi Party and the concern has been voiced by several top clerics including Syed Ahmed Bukhari, the Shahi imam of Delhi’s Jama Masjid and Maulana Salman Nadvi of Lucknow-based Darul Uloom Nadwatul Ulama.Nadvi said while the community was hoping for a Bihar-like “mahagathbandhan” in UP so that the secular votes could remain united. “But here, a fight is going on inside the SP. Muslim votes are more likely to get split now and Mayawati is set to get more support from the community. But overall, this atmosphere is going to help the BJP,” said Nadvi.Meanwhile, Bukhari, who met SP chief last week, termed the ongoing turmoil in party is “unfortunate and “at least Mulayam and Akhilesh need to sit together to resolve the differences” before there is any damage in the elections. “Father and son can not go against each other. Netaji can end this dispute and he should do so. Party appears to be suffering. Muslims are confused and despondent because of this.”Bukhari, however, added it was natural that Akhilesh would want to take more responsibility after being chief minister for four-and-a-half years and his removal from the post of state president was a step against that direction. “It is being said that outsiders have fueled the dispute…There is a need to strengthen Akhilesh’s hands,” he added. Barelvi cleric Maulana Tauqeer Raza said Muslim votes are likely to get split. indian express

What NHRC didn’t see in Kairana: Few molestation cases, fear of riot victims
http://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-news-india/kairana-hindu-muslim-exodus-muzaffarnagar-riot-victims-3099557/
Shamli: Of the 760 FIRs lodged at Kairana Police Station since Jan.2016, 12 concern crimes such as eveteasing, molestation etc. “Most cases are of dacoity, extortion,” says Circle Officer, Kairana, Bhushan Verma. “Even in the dehat (rural) areas and riot victim camps, theft is the basic problem.”NHRC team that visited Kairana in July-August to investigate claims of “Hindu exodus” submitted a report saying that the re-settling of Muzaffarnagar riots victims here had changed the demographics of the area. It also claimed that Muslim youths tease Hindu girls in Kairana town, leaving them scared to step out of home.Suleman, 60, originally from Fugana village of Muzaffaranagar, lives in the ‘Hassanpur Colony’ relief camp set up by the Jamait-e-Ulema near Bhura road in Kairana Dehat. Expressing surprise at NHRC report, he says they barely ever visit Kairana town.“My three sons crush stones all day, then we get one meal a day. None of the families in the camp could offer qurbani this Eid, neither did we have the money for even sewain. We are so busy with our own problems, how we will go tease girls, that too in Kairana town some 20 km away? In the money we would spend going there, we can cook 10 chapatis.”The camp has no sanitation facility, leaving at least half the members of each family suffering from diseases, says Mohd Imran. For clean drinking water, they must either walk several kilometres, or risk the solitary handpump, he adds.Around 29,300 persons affected by the Muzaffarnagar riots are estimated to be living in 65 ‘colonies’ spread across Muzaffarnagar and Shamli. Ninety percent of them are located 15-20 km from nearby towns, where the NHRC report said Hindu girls were teased. Indian Express visited almost 20 such camps in Kairana in Shamli district, and Kandhla and Muzaffarnagar in Muzaffarnagar district.indian express
Interest-free not Islamic banking is preferred choice
http://www.hindustantimes.com/mumbai-news/interest-free-not-islamic-banking-is-the-preferred-choice/story-ACVBHEs11yprsYQRpNceDN.html
Mumbai:The announcement by a public sector bank that it will start Islamic banking if the RBI, national banking regulator, approved the idea, has created excitement among groups campaigning for this kind of financial services. Islamic banks are run on religious principles that consider the taking and giving of Riba (interest) as sin. Customers of Islamic banks get returns on investments through equity, lease rents and dividends. At present, there are no guidelines for such services in India. Muslims are not well represented in the banking business. The community forms about 14% of the country’s population, but the Rajinder Sachar Committee, which reported on the social, economic, and educational conditions of the community, estimates that their share of bank deposits was 7.4% in 2005 and they took just 4.7% of loans.Syed Zahid Ahmad, a consultant for Islamic banking — he prefers the term participatory finance — looked at the total loans and deposits at scheduled commercial banks, and the Muslim share in banking as per the Sachar Committee, and estimated that the community was underbanked by nearly Rs 200,000 crores. “This is the borrowable credit not utilised by Muslims. This loss pushes Muslims behind other communities,” he said.“With 40% illiteracy and 31% headcounts living below poverty line, Indian Muslims are rather pulling Indian economy downwards. To develop the economy in a balanced way, we need to address the financial exclusion and economic plight among Indian Muslims,” said Ahmed. Shafeeq Rahman, a doctorate in Islamic economic thought from Jamia Millia Islamia university, said the National Sample Survey Office’s survey on debt and investments in 2013 reveals that 62.69% of Muslims operated a bank account compared to 73.57% Hindus, 80.26% Christians and 96.99% Jains. Only 8.72% of Muslims had post office savings accounts compared to 14.11% Hindus. “If government introduces interest-free banking, Muslims will opt for it. Money lying without any productive benefit will come to the mainstream,” said Rahman.H Abdur Raqeeb, convenor, National Commitee on Islamic Banking and general secretary, Indian Centre for Islamic Finance said after the Prime Minister asked RBI to constitute a committee to suggest ways to make 90% Indians to be financially included, the bank set up a Committee on Medium-term Path on Financial Inclusion which submitted its report in December 2014. “This committee has one full chapter on interest-free banking with a concluding recommendation to introduce interest-free windows in conventional banks,” said Raqeeb.HT

Student leader Umar Khalid came down heavily on the administration of JNU for its “inaction” in taking up the issue of Najeeb Ahmed, a student who went missing last week after he was allegedly assaulted by students affiliated to ABVP.“V-C says it is a minor issue and students are unnecessarily politicising and communalising it. Whereas it is ABVP that is communalising it,” Khalid told the Hindu, during his visit to the city to participate in a national seminar organised by Indian National Social Action Forum on ‘Shrinking Democratic Spaces and Rising Corporate Hegemony’. He alleged that Najeeb was beaten up in full view of the hostel warden, university president and hostellers on Oct.15 night. He has been missing since then. Najeeb was allotted a hostel only 10 days ago and joined JNU three months ago. Stating that the university also has a responsibility towards the student, Khalid said the administration had not filed a police complaint (and only the family and students had) and have not taken action against those who attacked Najeeb.“We are demanding that the attackers be made out of bounds from the hostel pending enquiry, so that witnesses can depose without fear of intimidation. But it has not been accepted. This shows the impunity ABVP enjoys within campuses,” he said. “In universities where student movements have been banned, it is the ABVP that calls the shots now.” the hindu

Ansari, who owned a small photocopy shop, lived in the village with his parents, wife, and an eight-month-old daughter. Shahban worked in a vehicle repair shop next to Ansari’s shop.“I was standing near Minhaj’s shop at about 9 at night, when eight to 10 men in plain clothes arrived on two motorcycles and a four-wheel vehicle,” Shahban told a team of activists that visited Dighari on October 17. “They started to chase and beat Minhaj and me. We tried to run. We thought they were criminals.”Unbeknownst to the young men, Sonu Singh, the district head of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad's Jamtara unit, had complained to the police that Ansari had posted a photograph of himself with a calf on a WhatsApp group on October 2, followed by another of him posing with beef. The slaughter of cows is banned in Jharkhand. At the police station that night, said Shabhan, they were thrashed by sub-inspector Harish Pathak and five or six other police personnel. “Later, they beat Minhaj separately,” recounted Shahban. “We could hear his cries. When they put him back in our room, his ear was bleeding. He could not speak, we tried to feed him, but he could not eat, the food would fall out of his mouth.”A government autopsy report has found that Minhaj Ansari died of “haemorrhage and shock” of injuries “caused by hard and blunt substances”. scroll

Ongoing tensions between Turkey and Iraq have intensified after Turkey said its troops fired artillery rounds at ISIL targets near the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, following a request by Kurdish Peshmerga forces.Binali Yildirim, Turkish PM, said on Sunday that Turkish troops stationed outside Mosul had provided support "with artillery, tanks and howitzers" following a request by Peshmerga forces. However, Iraq's joint-operations command on Monday denied Turkey's claims."Spokesman of the Joint Operations Command denies Turkish participation of any kind in operations for the liberation of Nineveh," a statement said, referring to the Iraqi province of which Mosul is the capital.Later in the day, Mevlut Cavusoglu, Turkey's foreign minister, said Turkish artillery fire had killed 17 ISIL fighters since the battle began and that four Turkish F-16 fighter jets were on standby to take part. aljazeera
