INDIA: CURRENCY CRISIS
India shock bank note ban sparks cash chaos:Reuters
http://news.trust.org/item/20161109131542-n4wtw/
Mumbai/New Delhi: Indians struggled to pay for basics goods like food and fuel on Wednesday and fretted about their savings, after the government withdrew 500 and 1,000 rupee notes from circulation in a bid to flush out money hidden from the tax man.The shock measure also sent shudders through the investment community on a day when the markets were also reeling at the election of Republican candidate Donald Trump as next US president.India's National Stock Exchange share index slumped as much as 6.3 percent in early trade before recovering most losses to close the day off 1.3%. The currency move, announced late on Tuesday night by PM Narendra Modi, aims to bring billions of dollars worth of unaccounted wealth into the mainstream economy and curb corruption. The biggest disruption in decades to cash transactions, which power much of the rural economy, comes months before a series of state elections including in India's most populous UP.Critics have warned that ordinary people who do not have access to the banking system will be hardest hit, and that Modi risks upsetting his ruling party's support base of small traders and businessmen who largely deal in cash.It will also affect politicians running for office in a country where there is no state financing for elections and many campaigns are funded by unaccounted wealth."This is a pre-election disaster for political parties, the piles of cash sitting with them are worthless," said one tax official, who asked not to be named. "If elections can become cheaper as a result of this decision, it would be a good beginning," Finance Minister Arun Jaitley told a news conference. The replacement of the old currency was also designed to stop anti-India militants suspected of using fake 500 rupee notes to fund operations. From midnight, the larger bank notes ceased to be legal tender for transactions other than exchanging them at banks for smaller notes.Retailers refused to accept the bills, worth around $7.50 and $15 respectively, and people were unable to access ATMs after banks closed them down.New bills of 500 and 2,000 rupees will be introduced from Nov. 10.Meanwhile, bank ATMs were closed and banks prepared for a flood of people seeking to exchange larger bank notes for smaller ones. They will have to fill a form and show proof of identity to exchange no more than 4,000 rupees worth of the old notes at any bank, which is likely to cause further chaos.

2000 Rupees Note NGC Rumour: There's No Nano GPS Chip
http://gadgets.ndtv.com/social-networking/news/2000-note-nano-gps-chip-rumours-1623133
In a move that took everyone by surprise, PM Narendra Modi on Tuesday announced Rs. 500 and 1000 notes are being demonetised, and they will be replaced by new 500 Rs. note and a brand new 2000 rupees note. RBI has released images and some details about the new 500 rupees and 2000 rupees note, but even before PM Modi's announcement there were messages going around on WhatsApp talking about the 2000 rupees note having a 'nano GPS chip' - aka NGC - that can be used to track the notes from anywhere. We treated these forwards with a healthy doubt of scepticism, and with RBI having released many details of the 2000 rupees note and the so-called nano GPS chip finding no mention therein, it's safe to say that those forwards are a hoax. New Delhi:Calling the govt decision to demonetize higher denomination notes as a “gimmick”, CPI-M on Wednesday demanded the cost of withdrawing currency notes to be made public.“This demonetization is attempted as a gimmick to divert attention from serious social and political failures of this govt in the past 2.5 years,” CPI-M general secretary Sitaram Yechury tweeted.“What is the cost of withdrawing currency notes and replacing them with Rs 2,000 notes? Also, its economic and social costs must be made public,” he said, dubbing the move to be another “jumla”.“What are the estimates of black money that will be curbed by this move?Govt should make the figures public,” said the leader of the CPI-Marxist.Yechury said the move was “poorly planned and not thought-through” and did not address the major sources of black money abroad or those invested in property, gold and such instruments.“To uncover the illicit money trail, we demand that the govt release the name of top 100 defaulters of bank loans,” added Yechury.

Amidst the ongoing debate on banning triple talaq and the Uniform Civil Code, the Raza Academy has said that it will file an intervening petition along with All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) against the ban on triple talaq. In a meet of Ulama-E-Ahle Sunnat held on Tuesday at Anjuman Islam at CST, over 100 people who attended decided to oppose ban on triple talaq and Uniform Civil Code.Saeed Noorie of Raza Academy said, "We decided that we will speed up the drive of taking signatures against ban on triple talaq and against UCC. People will also be asked to collect signatures after Friday prayers."When asked why Raza Academy wanted to file a petition considering AIMPLB represents all sects, including Sunnis that Noorie held meeting for, Noorie said, "All Tanzeem and Idare want to oppose this. These see this as a work of piety. There is no competition in this. We also wanted to be part of it." "Many people from different religions are also opposing the UCC. However, there is constant talk of govt having it. There is no one law that can be made for all communities. Each has its different way. While in nikah there should be two people as a proof for it to have happened, in case of Hindu marriages it gets solemnized after circling a fire," added Noorie.DNA

AMU forces faculty Mustafa Zaidi to retire: The Hindu
http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/other-states/aligarh-muslim-university-forces-faculty-to-retire/article9321252.ece
Meerut: AMU forced the AMU Teachers Association (AMUTA) secretary Mustafa Zaidi to retire for allegedly raising cases of financial corruption against the V-C Lt. Gen. Zameer Uddin Shah (retd.). The move led to widespread protests by his fellow faculty, but some of them also said that no one wanted to go public with his or her opposition against the AMU decision due to “sheer fear of a witch hunt by the university administration”. AMUTA, on its part, strongly condemned the decision of the university’s Executive Council to send Professor Zaidi on forced retirement, alleging that he was forced to retire because he kept on raising the issue of alleged corruption, alleged arbitrary promotions and admissions, and financial bungling in the university.AMU authorities, however, rejected the charges of “witch hunting”. Professor Javed Akhtar, Registrar of AMU, told the media that “Zaidi was charged with dereliction of duty, attempt to create disorder and vitiate the peaceful atmosphere on the campus, and false propaganda through social media and internet. An enquiry by a retired judge of the Allahabad High Court found him guilty”.AMUTA, , said: “It was because of Prof. Zaidi’s repeated protests that the Visitor of the University, the President of India, ordered an enquiry into the working of the university. The motivated action against the AMUTA secretary is aimed at preventing any further revelation of this type from coming out”. thehindu
Pollution: Why allow crackers at religious functions:SC

New Delhi: Stating that the whole of Delhi will have to shut down for one day if “dreaded” and “severe” pollution is not checked, the Supreme Court Tuesday observed that it may completely ban bursting of firecrackers, including during religious festivals.“The limit has gone beyond human tolerance… It has become dangerous for human life. It is a disaster and you must have a disaster management plan for this. The time has come when you have to have a policy; a concrete plan,” a bench led by Chief Justice TS Thakur told the counsel for the Centre and the Delhi govt. The bench, also comprising Justice AK Sikri and Justice SA Bobde, observed that there could be different levels of pollution, requiring different sets of measures, but it must be contained before a “lethal” situation arises.“Suppose when pollution is at level A, you start odd-even rule for vehicles. When it is at level B, you ban construction; at level C, you shut down schools too; at level D, you shut down power plants, etc. But there could now be a level E when you will have to shut down the whole of Delhi. Do you have a plan?” asked the apex court.the hindu
Tipu Sultan Jayanti: Karnataka braces for trouble as Hindutva, Christian groups plan protests
http://scroll.in/article/821023/tipu-sultan-jayanti-karnataka-braces-for-trouble-as-hindutva-and-christian-groups-plan-protests
Unfazed by last year’s clashes during the birth anniversary celebrations of Tipu Sultan, the 18th century Muslim ruler of Mysuru, the Congress govt in Karnataka has decided to hold the event again this year on Nov.10. Mindful of the opposition to the plan, the Karnataka govt has requested the Centre to provide 1,600 paramilitary personnel to help maintain the peace on that day.The legacy of Tipu Sultan is entangled in a divisive rhetoric of communal politics, and the govt announcement has been met with strong opposition from Hindutva and Christian groups. While Hindutva groups call the monarch the “butcher of Hindus”, Mangalorean Christians accuse the govt of whitewashing documented evidence that the ruler forcibly converted their ancestors to Islam, and killed scores for resisting.Several Christian groups have decided to take to the streets to protest against the state’s plans to commemorate Tipu Jayanti. scroll

Missing JNU student Najeeb Ahmed may be living with new ID, claims TOI report
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/delhi/Najeeb-may-be-living-with-new-ID/articleshow/55320930.cms
New Delhi: 24 days after all efforts to trace him have failed, police now think that Najeeb Ahmed, a BSc student from JNU, might have taken up an assumed identity and is living in a secluded place, probably a small town.Sources told TOI on Tuesday that the cops are relying on the opinion of doctors who say that depression and obsessive compulsive disorder may have led Ahmed, missing from the university since Oct.15, to distance himself from everyone, including his family members. Psychoanalysis of his personality has been carried out to infer where he might go in such a case.According to mental health experts, most patients suffering from these mental conditions could change their visual identity to take up the persona of an assumed character. They are capable of surviving for days without support from anyone. Based on this theory, police teams have been sent to verify inputs that a person resembling the missing student was recently seen in a small town in Darbhanga district in Bihar. TOI has accessed Ahmed's medical prescriptions that confirm he was using medicines like Flunil and Lonazep. Mental health experts said that people who were prescribed these medicines suffered from dissociative reactive disorder, a condition in which a person started associating himself with a different identity.

They have decided to continue it,” separatist leader Yasin Malik said.“Programme (protest) will happen again. Sources said while some participants in the meeting sought more relaxation in the protest calendars, they asked the leadership to “continue the struggle”. “They gave some suggestions… Keeping in view the issues of those sections, a comprehensive (protest) programme will come,” Mirwaiz said. indian express

Mewat:Barely weeks after the police raided biryani shops in Mewat, Union minister for minority affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi travelled to Bicchor to launch the central govt ’s Muslim outreach programme — progress panchayat.“BJP never discriminates on the basis of religion,” he declared at a public meeting in the village on Sept.29.But his words failed to cut ice with the locals, some of whom narrated stories of the panchayat of Hindu majority Tauru village slapping fine on a local school for special assembly marking Eid and asking it to get rid of lone Muslim teacher.BJP govt in Haryana also came under fire from civil society and political rivals for the rape of two Muslim girls and murder of a couple in a Mewat village late August. One of the rape survivors claimed that the attackers told her that they were being punished for eating beef. “It is a particular mindset that is creating trouble in Mewat and rest of the country,” says Ali Anwar Ansari, a Rajya Sabha MP from Bihar. “RSS and BJP wants to create a Hindu-Muslim divide to deflect attention from the growing unrest among Jats who have refused to accept a non-Jat as CM . After Gujarat, Haryana has become Hindutva laboratory for them”. Ansari who is seeking justice for the two survivors, blamed the rise of the BJP in Haryana for a sense of fear among the minority community.HT

Mumbai:Arguing for bail, alleged IS ‘recruit’ Areeb Majeed claimed that the NIA had kept him in illegal custody for over 24 hours when he returned to India.Advocate Mubin Solkar, representing Majeed, argued that the prosecution case is that Majeed was apprehended based on a source information received by the Ministry of Home Affairs about his return. “MHA directed the NIA to investigate the case based on this information. It is not believable that despite receiving the order, the NIA sought his custody only over 20 hours after he had returned,” Solkar argued. NIA had claimed that it had taken Majeed’s custody from the ATS on Nov.29.Further, Solkar also argued that Majeed could not be charged under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act since Islamic State was not included in the schedule to fall under the definition of terrorist outfit in the country. “IS was only declared a terrorist organisation in Feb.2015, months after the applicant’s (Majeed) arrest in the case. Hence, the charges under UAPA cannot be invoked against him,” Solkar argued. Solkar said mere photographs showing Majeed holding weapons in his hand do not prove that he committed a terrorist activity. He also said that Majeed had no criminal antecedents and as a young boy was possibly misled. “He contacted his parents, got in touch with the Indian Consulate in Turkey and came back on his own. If he had a guilty mind, he would never have come back. If he had been in the terrorist organisation, he would not have been a fool to return,” Solkar said. indian express
