New Delhi:Centre on Thursday filed a caveat in the Supreme Court asking it not to pass any interim order without hearing its argument on the demonetisation issue. Centre today filed a caveat in the Supreme Court that it be heard if the court entertains any petition on demonetisation of Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 500 notes even as the apex court indicated that it may hear on Nov.15 a plea challenging the govt decision. “Let it be listed on Tuesday if the petition gets numbered by the registry,” a 3-judge bench headed by Justice AR Dave said when a lawyer today sought urgent hearing of his plea on the ground that demonetisation is causing a lot of problem to the common citizens. Modi govt filed a caveat in the SC registry saying that it be heard if the court entertains and passes some directions on the petitions.The plea was mentioned by advocate Sangam Lal Pandey who has filed the PIL in his personal capacity.He has sought quashing of the Nov.8 notification of the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) of Finance Ministry on the grounds that the common public had not been granted sufficient time and as a result they are facing a lot of hardship. PIL has also sought a direction to the Centre that sufficient time be given to the citizens for exchanging the demonetised currency notes.Besides this petition, another plea was filed yesterday in the apex court seeking quashing of the decision to demonetise Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 500 currency notes on grounds that it infringed on citizens’ right to life and to trade, among others.PIL filed by Delhi-based lawyer Vivek Narayan Sharma, which could be listed for hearing during the week, has termed the notification of DEA as “dictatorial” claiming it did not grant reasonable time to citizens for exchanging the specified bank notes to legitimate notes to avoid “large scale mayhem, life threating difficulties“.PTI/india live today

The govt will re-introduce all currency note denominations with new designs and feature, economic affairs secretary Shaktikanta Das said on Thursday, a move apparently aimed at draining illegal cash from the economy. Govt sprang a surprise on Tuesday by withdrawing Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, causing an upheaval with millions of people holding cash savings hurled into uncertainty.But the case will be different for smaller denominations, Das said.“Let me make it clear, tender status of existing Rs 100, 50 or other denominations will continue to be legal,” the secretary said, as quoted by ANI.“From time to time, new series of notes with new features and designs will be infused in market.”Banks and automatic teller machines started dispensing new Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes from Thursday. New Delhi: Govt has warned that cash deposits above Rs 2.5 lakh threshold under the 50-day window could attract tax plus a 200% penalty in case of income mismatch. "We would be getting reports of all cash deposited during the period of Nov.10 to Dec.30, 2016, above a threshold of Rs 2.5 lakh in every account."The (tax) dept.would do matching of this with income returns filed by the depositors. And suitable action may follow," revenue secretary Hashmukh Adhia said last night.Any mismatch with income declared by the account holder will be treated as a case of tax evasion."This would be treated as a case of tax evasion and the tax amount plus a penalty of 200% of the tax payable would be levied as per Section 270(A) of the Income Tax Act," he said. Adhia said small businessmen, housewives, artisans and workers who had some cash lying as their savings at home should not be worried about any tax department scrutiny. "Such group of people... need not worry about such small amount of deposits up to Rs 1.5 or 2 lakh since it would be below the taxable income. There will be no harassment by the Income Tax Dept.for such small deposits made," he said.On people resorting to buying of jewelery, he said persons buying jewelery has to provide the PAN number."Action will be taken against those jewellers who fail to take PAN numbers from such buyers. When the cash deposits of the jewellers would be scrutinised against the sales made, whether they have taken the PAN number of the buyer or not will also be checked," he added.PTI

Kejriwal questioned the logic behind the introduction of Rs 2000 notes saying it will fan corruption and the black money economy instead of containing it and that demonetisation has hit the common men hard. Gorakhpur: A 40-year-old washerwoman died allegedly due to shock when on Wednesday she learnt that banks will not accept denominations of Rs 1000. Tirtharaji came to know about centre’s demonitisation move only when she reached the bank. Incident took place at Captainganj tehsil of Kushinagar. Pictures of the woman’s body lying on ground along with two Rs 1,000 denomination notes and a pass book went viral on social media.As per reports, the woman had saved Rs 2,000. She had exchanged the change for bigger denomination of two Rs 1,000 notes sometime back so that it would be easier for her to carry to the bank.DM Kushinagar Shambhu Kumar said, “Officials from the revenue department have been asked to visit the house of the deceased woman. If it comes out to be a death due to shock then necessary action will be taken.”In another incident, an 8-year-old girl died allegedly due to delay in treatment when her father, who was on his way to hospital to seek medical help, could not get petrol as he was carrying a Rs 1000 note which the pump station attendant refused to take. Lucknow: Cash amounting to Rs 3 crore was recovered from the car of a BJP leader in Ghaziabad on Thursday, police said. Car was coming from Delhi and was headed for Lucknow, an official told IANS. The car had a Haryana number plate (HR 26 AR 9662).The Maruti Swift model car was intercepted at Indirapuram when the driver tried to break through a police barricade.The police personnel on the spot chased the car and on checking found the cash in the boot. The car is registered in the name of Ajeet Mishra of Gurgaon and two persons, Siddhartha Shukla and Anoop Agarwal, were travelling in the car at the time of the cash recovery.The two said the money belonged to them and that they were taking it to deposit it in the party fund in Lucknow.The police informed the Income Tax department, and IT officials are trying sdzazto confirm the source of the money.Meanwhile, Ex-head of Ghaziabad city BJP Ashok Monga reached the police station and certified, on a letter pad, that the money was being “sent by the BJP Central Office to BJP state office in Lucknow for party activities”.IANS

Bareilly: A day after the govt discontinued Rs. 500 and 1000 notes in a shock announcement to curb black money, sacks full of burnt notes were found in Bareilly in UP.The burnt Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 notes were reportedly brought in sacks and then dumped by workers of a company on Parsa Kheda road at CB Ganj in Bareilly, sources said. Police officials said the notes appeared to have been cut, damaged and then burnt. Shaila had sold her mangalsutra to pay her daughter's medical bills, which was now 20 notes of Rs 1,000 that she carefully placed in her small purse tucked inside her blouse.“We travel in general compartment, there is always a fear of being robbed,” said Shaila.When they reached Mumbai's Tata Memorial Hospital on Wednesday morning, mother and daughter were shocked that a taxi driver refused to accept their Rs 1,000 note. “We were told that the govt has banned these notes,” said Shaila. She has now given the Rs 20,000 cash to her sister in the hope that she can deposit it in the bank and get notes which she can use.Tata Memorial Hospital in Parel where Jyoti will undergo chemotherapy is run with govt support and, like other public hospitals, was accepting the demonetised Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 notes on the first day of the currency ban. New Delhi:RBI will release a new series of Rs. 1,000 notes in a few months, Economic Affairs Secretary Shaktikanta Das said on Thursday. He said Rs. 2000 note was introduced keeping in mind the convenience of the people and the inflationary pressures.“RBI is going to monitor the release of the Rs 2000 notes, and in due course, within a few months, the Rs 1000 note will be reintroduced into the market with completely new dimensions, new design and new colour from the old one,” Das said while speaking at the Economics Editors’ Conference.

Giving some more relief to common man, the Centre on Thursday said old Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes can be used to pay utility charges like water and electricity, taxes, penalty and fees to central and state govts till midnight of Nov.11.While the govt had permitted people to use such notes for payment of certain services like rail and metro ticket, rail catering, airline ticket, buying LPG cylinder and medicines with doctor’s prescription. Economic affairs secretary Shaktikanta Das on Thursday tweeted: “Old Rs 500, 1000 notes to be accepted for payment of fees, charges, taxes, penalty to central and state govt s, including municipalities and local bodies.” Such old notes to be accepted for payment of utility charges like water and electricity, he said.Exemptions have also been made for payments at govt hospitals, milk booths, crematoria/burial grounds and petrol pumps till Nov.11HT

New Delhi: Supreme Court has given 2 weeks’ time to Gujarat to file its response to social activist Teesta Setalvad’s petition challenging the state police’s order to freeze her personal and NGO’s accounts.A bench of justice Dipak Misra and justice Amitava Roy told additional solicitor general Tushar Mehta that the response should be submitted by Nov.16 and fixed December 1 to hear the matter again.The court told Mehta that this is the last opportunity given to Gujarat to place its response after Setalvad’s advocate, senior counsel Kapil Sibal, complained govt had taken adjournment twice in the past. “My accounts are frozen for nearly three years now. Ranchi: Jharkhand govt plans to crack down on misuse of funds and what it calls forcible conversions of tribals by Christian missionaries after a report accused the Church of inciting the state’s sizeable population to block development schemes.Alarm bells were set ringing in the power corridors of Ranchi last month after a massive tribal protest against proposed changes in the state’s land acquisition law — demonstrations that the govt says were planned and funded by Christian missionaries with foreign money. On Sept.15, more than 100,00 tribals converged in Ranchi to protest against 2 ordinances that proposed acquisition of tribal agricultural land for development purposes such as roads, schools, hospitals and flyovers.Never before had the state seen such a huge congregation of tribals — who account for more than a quarter of the state’s population — in the capital on a non-political platform daring the govt. A little known Adivasi Buddhijivi Manch (ABM) — Tribal Intellectual Cell — headed the protests.A shocked state govt asked its special branch to probe the protests. The branch’s report says the rally was conceived and executed by the churches, who are allegedly using foreign funds meant for development work to incite tribal unrest.Senior RSS functionary Indresh Kumar has demanded a ‘surgical strike’ against conversion.
