Zakir Naik’s open letter a veiled threat to govt? appeals govt to be truthful with facts, fair in investigation
http://www.india.com/news/india/zakir-naik-writes-open-letter-appeals-govt-to-be-truthful-with-facts-fair-in-investigation-1478078/
Zakir Naik on Saturday morning released an open letter to govt and his fellow countrymen. Talking about the how the media and govt treated him, Naik says that none of his religious preaching over the past 25 years has resulted in any violence or violation of low.Naik in his letter explains about the govt action against him and Muslim community after the allegations were levied on him. He also mentioned that if IRF are banned in India, he would be welcomed by other countries where he would not face such charges. He wrote that Muslim countries would accept him with a red carpet. He quotes from the Holy Quran as saying, “They strive in the way of Allah and do not fear the blame of the blamers. That is the favor of Allah, he bestows it upon whom he wills.” Firstpost reports “In his 'open letter to Indians', Zakir Naik positions himself as the ‘biggest name and most popular figure of the community’, and portrays the govt action against him as an attack on the community.Naik also offers a veiled threat to the Indian govt and investigative agencies that if he and his organisation IRF are banned in India, he would be welcomed by other Muslim countries with a "red carpet". He also says that such an action will be the "biggest jolt to the country’s democracy in recent times".Naik once again justifies all the religious preaching he has done in the past 25 years and says that none of his words amount to violation of law and forced religious conversions — a claim the investigators have challenged. Naik ends his open letter quoting a verse from the Quran: For Allah says, 'They plot and plan, and Allah too plans. And the best of planners is Allah. (Qur'an 3:54) Without doubt.” india.com / Firstpost

Zakir Naik’s NGO gave Rs 50 lakh to Rajiv Gandhi trust, 3 more officers face action

New Delhi: Days after 4 officials, including a Joint Secretary, of Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) were suspended for renewing the FCRA registration of Zakir Naik’s NGO IRF despite an ongoing probe against him, it is learnt that at least 3 more officials will soon be suspended for ignoring alleged FCRA violations during an earlier audit.Sources said among the alleged irregularities ignored was a donation of Rs 50 lakh by IRF to the Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust in 2011 during the second term of the UPA govt.Home Ministry officials Friday said they had placed IRF in the ‘prior permission’ category, under which it is mandatory for an organisation to take permission from MHA before accepting or utilising any foreign contribution.“3 or 4 more officials, up to the rank of Deputy Secretary at least, who served in FCRA division of the Home Ministry in 2013 and 2014, are likely to be suspended soon. While some are serving in different branches of MHA currently, others may have been posted to other ministries. The matter has been taken up with DoPT, and the suspensions are imminent,” sources said. IRF spokesperson Aarif Malik said, “In 2014, FCRA division conducted an in-depth investigation, with its officials parked in IRF office in Mumbai for 3 weeks. The result was that they gave IRF a clean chit. This probe happened under the same govt. When a fresh questionnaire was sent to IRF in August, questions were being raised about what the MHA had found in its earlier probe. There was no way that the MHA could share the earlier report that gave a clean chit, as it would have a direct implication of witch-hunting by govt now.”“Allegations being leveled against IRF by MHA now are defensive reactions when faced with uncomfortable facts. They are inventing these things. As far as the donation to Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust is concerned, IRF makes donations for several causes such as higher education, surgeries and scholarships for medical students — all causes that fit into the charter of IRF. These are clearly reflected in annual returns filed by IRF,” Malik said. Congress acknowledged that IRF had donated Rs 50 lakh to Rajiv Gandhi Charitable Trust some years ago. It said the amount was returned when there was a controversy over Naik’s activities recently. Indian express

Kochi:A public programme on secularism organised by an Islamic outfit in Kochi received threats following which its venue was changed, police said on Friday. ‘Peace and Harmony’ programme organised by Jamaat-e-Islami’s local unit on Thursday was shifted to another venue following the threat perception, they said. Organisers agreed to a suggestion by the police and held the programme at a school premises in the neighbourhood. It was originally slated to be held near the high court. Programme, attended by leaders from different religions, was held amidst tight security. Police, however, declined to disclose any further detail about the security threat including its source. “I cannot reveal much,” a senior police official said. Jamaat-e-Islami said they did not receive any message of security threat. “We changed the venue when the police informed us about the threat perception and asked us to hold the programme in another place,” Jamaat leader Mujeeb Rahman said.He said the outfit has been organising the ‘Peace and Humanity’ campaign nationwide in the backdrop of “growing communal rift” in the society. “In Kochi, we organised the programme in which leaders of different religions-Hindu, Muslim and Christian-came together on one stage and called for the need for an intensive campaign for establishment of peace and humanity in the society,” Rahman added. Madras Court Court asks Tamil Nadu govt to ensure there is no slaughtering of camels on Bakrid
http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/tamil-nadu/court-asks-govt-to-ensure-there-is-no-slaughtering-of-camels-on-bakrid/article9091378.ece
Chennai: First Bench of the Madras High Court on Friday directed the Tamil Nadu Govt to “ensure that the interim order of the court denying permission for camel slaughtering is not violated.” Dismissing a public interest litigation petition filed by Indian National League founder J. Abdul Raheem seeking to provide proper facilities for slaughtering camel on the day of Bakrid, Chief Justice SK Kaul and Justice R. Mahadevan, made it clear that the officer in-charge of the local police station would be personally held responsible in case of any violation of the order. However, during the hearing of the case, the judges made it clear that the court had not banned camel slaughtering, but had only temporarily denied permission since there were no proper abattoirs in the State. “The interim order was passed on the basis of the Centre’s stand that slaughtering of camels could not be permitted without proper facilities in accordance with the Central Acts on animal welfare,” it said.At one stage, the petitioner’s counsel tried to persuade the court to adjourn the PIL shortly, saying: “Even the authorities are ready to provide us the facilities. I can produce the copy of the report made by the committee appointed for this purpose if the court could pass over the PIL shortly.” To this, the Bench responded: “We have no issue in passing over the matter. But we are not inclined to entertain this petition for the simple reason that what it seeks in effect is nullification of the interim order passed in a different batch of petitions.”“We will examine all the issues related to camel slaughtering in the main petitions, and interim order has been passed only in connection with sacrifice of camels,” the judges added. When the petitioner wanted the court to permit slaughtering at least for this year, the court said: “Even last year we permitted on assurance that rules will not be violated. But the rules were completely violated.” thehindu
Why fear has gripped biryani roadside stalls in Haryana’s Mewat district
http://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-news-india/beef-ban-cow-meat-biryani-mewat-eid-gau-rakshaks-3023306/
Mewat: “Remove the biryani vessel, take it inside.”The panic is clear on the face of a middle-aged man standing near a makeshift biryani stall on the Delhi-Alwar road at Ferozepur Jhirka in Haryana’s Mewat district on Friday. Shaukat Ahmed Qureshi, 17, the stall owner, responds in a flash. He calls out to a friend for help and both hurriedly carry away the large, blackened aluminium vessel to a dhaba across the street. Hiding, moving, and at times even throwing away the biryani, has become a daily ritual for the 6 remaining food-stall owners on this stretch. Until a month ago, there were 20 of them but things have changed since 25 samples of biryani from these stalls were taken away by local police, based on “complaints” that cow meat was being used in the preparation. Who complained isn’t quite clear.Kuldeep Singh, SP, Mewat, says some called the police station, some walked in. “No FIR has been filed in the case,” he admits. Still, 7 samples of biryani were collected and sent for tests. But fear has clearly gripped the biryani stalls here.Over the last month, says Shaukat, “at least 3 vehicles full of policemen from the Ferozepur Jhirka and Nuh thanas have been coming here every day”.

Haryana beef row: Opposition parties accuse Khattar govt of creating communal conflict for electoral gain

New Delhi: Political opponents of the Manohar Lal govt have accused the BJP of conducting beef raids in Mewat to stoke anti-Muslim sentiments across India, from Kashmir to Haryana, to influence the UP assembly elections in 2017.Congress national spokesperson Meem Afzal alleged that the Haryana govt was indulging in a campaign that was even against the spirit of the PM's contention when he declared that most of the gaurakshaks were antisocial elements. "Haryana govt thinks it is even bigger than the PM who did the nation much service to declare that gaurakahs was a front for criminal activities in most cases. On the other hand, the BJP is trying to create an atmosphere where it culminates into a communal riot on the occasion of Eid so that they can reap the electoral harvest in UP elections. Due to its crass failure, the state govt is trying to hide its face behind cow."Leader of Opposition in Haryana Assembly, INLD's Abhay Singh Chautala also blamed the ruling party of trying to create conflict.Mail Today

From yoga to activism to business, Baba Ramdev shares with TOI his company Patanjali's plans to turn cow protection into a viable business. He talks of his dream world-class university project and rapport with PM Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah. He said,“Mere sloganeering won't accomplish gau raksha. There are people doing good work in this area. They should be encouraged. If the govt can spend crores on teerth yatras and Haj, why can't it spend on cow protection? There should be a gaushala policy at the state and central level, and research in this field. We are already doing it. We have allocated Rs 500 crore for this and will spend more if required. As far as the practical applications of gau raksha are concerned, we have products like gau-nyle, a substitute for phenyle. We are starting a dairy with a capacity of 10 lakh litres of milk daily. If people use cow-related products, it will lead to cow protection. As far as technology to enable this is concerned, we are working on it through breed selection, embryo transplantation and semen selection to improve the quality of cows. Those spreading terror in the name of gau raksha should be stopped. That is necessary.”TOI

While they are killing people on the streets and arresting them under their draconian laws, we have learnt that they have formulated a kill list, whereby they have identified pro-freedom leaders and activists and those civil society members, business leaders, govt employees and journalists, who have not succumbed to their machinations,” Geelani said. “This is a very serious issue and we warn the occupier and their local stooges that any such misadventure will have serious repercussions”.“Shaken by our resolve and our united struggle for freedom, India has once again started the farce of engagement that it time and again has used to divert attention from the reality on the ground here,” he said. “They will come again to ask – what do we want. They know the answer to that question. We want freedom”.Saying that current protests have provided a powerful push towards the goal and freedom is “very much in sight”, the separatist leader has said that they have removed mainstream “smokescreen”. Geelani has thanked Pakistan, China, OIC and some other country’s who have expressed their concern over the killings in Kashmir. “During this uprising, Pakistan has once again proved that they are our friends and well-wishers. We are also thankful to several other countries like China, Norway, Saudi Arabia, New Zealand, Iran and to the OIC for expressing concern over the brutal repression by India in Kashmir. We are also thankful to Turkey for its unambiguous support to our just struggle for freedom from Indian occupation,”he said.indianexpress

The petition came before a Bench of Justice Pradeep Nandrajog and Pratibha Rani. The Bench has sought reply from Omar's estranged wife Payal Abdullah. Abdullah has challenged the August 30 order of the trial court which held that he had failed to prove irretrievable breakdown of marriage. “Petitioner [Omar] has not been able to explain a single circumstance to show that the supervening circumstances have erupted which has made it impossible for him to continue his relationship with the respondent [Payal]. Rather, evidence shows that they were in continuous contact till the filing of the divorce petition,” the family court had said in its order. Mr. Abdullah has sought divorce from Payal saying her conduct had caused him pain and harassment. thehindu
No instant triple talaq, let women have right to divorce, suggests Shia board: indianexpress

Lucknow:Opposing the approach of All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) to Islamic marriage laws, All India Shia Personal Law Board(AISPLB) has suggested the adoption of a “modern nikahnama”, seeking changes in the terms and conditions of marriage under Islamic law. AISPLB spokesman Maulana Yasoob Abbas, who submitted a draft of the nikahnama to eminent Shia cleric Maulana Kalbe Sadiq, vice-president of AIMPLB, said he has suggested invalidating the instantaneous triple talaq, and provide women with the right to divorce. He said he had also written to AIMPLB member Zafaryab Jilani a few days back, suggesting the changes. Abbas said the stand taken by AIMPLB in the Supreme Court has “defamed the religion of Islam”.Abbas said the AISPLB will also put their views before the SC in the coming days. He said they have tried to address the issues related to dowry and inadequate mehr given to brides at the time of marriage. Abbas said Maulana Sadiq discussed the changes in nikahnama with him for about an hour and assured that he will put it for discussion before the executive of AIMPLB in its next meeting.

Goa’s family laws may become India’s Uniform Civil Code
http://www.heraldgoa.in/Goa/Goa%E2%80%99s-family-laws-may-become-India%E2%80%99s-Uniform-Civil-Code/106104.html
New Delhi:Law Commission has borrowed heavily from the 2-volume ‘Family laws of Goa, Daman and Diu’ penned by senior advocate Manohar Sinai Usgaocar (83) for inclusion in the questionnaire to be released shortly for a public debate on implementation of a uniform civil code in the country. The questionnaire is to be issued to seek views of stakeholders on replacing the existing laws concerning marriages, divorce, succession and other issues with a single civil code alike the Goa Civil Code that was largely adopted from the Portuguese Civil Code of 1867 and applied in the State irrespective of their religion, ethnicity or linguistic affiliation.Law Commission has already procured a copy of English translation of Codigo Civil Portugues but it found 2-volume book of Usgaoncar, a former additional solicitor general, in English as quite useful in comparing the Goan law with the existing different laws like the Hindu, Muslim and Parsi laws. It has also approached Usgaoncar, an authority on the Portuguese law, if he can provide a copy of his recent translation of all 2538 articles of the Portugese civil code. It has also shown interest in understanding from him the law of Portuguese civil procedure that can cut down backlog of the court cases as it envisages written arguments to cut down time in disposal of the cases, a Commission official said.Herald Goa

Mumbai: Can a family court direct a wife to be medically examined to enable the husband to prove his claim of non-consummation of marriage? Certainly, said the Bombay high court as it upheld an order passed this July by the Mumbai family court in a divorce petition filed in 2011 on grounds of non-consummation.Justice KK Tated of Bombay HC recently rejected a challenge by a woman against an order passed by the family court which had directed her to "undergo a physical and psychological examination medical examination to be conducted by the medical board of Sir JJ Hospital, Mumbai". The family court judge had called for such an examination on a plea made by the husband in July after she deposed during the divorce trial that she had consummated the marriage with him in 2011 multiple times immediately after their marriage. His plea for divorce, filed 5 years ago, was on the grounds that she had not, and was "incapable of". Timesofindia

The economy of the occupied Palestinian territories would be at least twice as large if the 49-year-old Israeli occupation was lifted, a new UN report has found.“Occupation imposes a heavy cost on the economy of the Occupied Palestinian Territory, which might otherwise reach twice its current size,” reads the report released by the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).The report, which analyses the economy of the occupied Palestinian territories of the West Bank, East Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip for 2015, underlines Israeli “restrictions on the movement of people and goods; systematic erosion and destruction of the productive base; losses of land, water and other natural resources”, as some of the main factors hindering the territories’ ability to thrive.aljazeera
