Setback for Modi: India loses world’s fastest growing economy tag as GDP grows slowest in 2 yrs

New Delhi: India’s economic growth unexpectedly slowed to its lowest in more than two years, dragged down by construction, manufacturing and trade services, and stripping the country of its status as the world’s fastest growing major economy.Annual GDP growth for the January-March period came in at 6.1 percent, compared with a provisional 7.0 percent in the previous quarter, government data showed on Wednesday. The expansion was much slower than the 7.1 percent forecast by economists in a Reuters poll. It was also lower than China’s growth of 6.9 percent for the first three months of 2017.“This data is closer to the ground reality than the previous ones,” said Anjali Verma, an economist at PhillipCapital in Mumbai. The figure is the lowest since the December quarter in 2014, which registered 6.0 percent growth, Reuters data shows.For the 2016/17 fiscal year ending in March, New Delhi reported GDP growth of 7.1 percent, slower than an 8.0 percent expansion a year ago. The weak GDP data will be a setback for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who completed three years in office last week.Wednesday’s figures, however, have not changed expectations for monetary policy. Analysts still expect the RBI to keep interest rates on hold. “We continue to expect the RBI to remain on pause, with any rate hikes ruled out,” said Shubhada Rao, chief economist at YES Bank.Reuters

SBI has revised service charges on ATM withdrawals for users of its mobile app "SBI Mobile Buddy", as well as for various other cash and online transactions, effective from June 1. The country's largest lender will start charging customers Rs 25 per transaction for withdrawing money from an ATM through its mobile wallet app from Thursday. SBI mobile wallet allows cardless ATM withdrawals+ via its app.SBI will also levy charges on withdrawals at branches and ATMs beyond the four free transactions, for its basic savings banks deposit account (BSBDA) holders. BSBDA is a zero balance savings account that provides basic services like an ATM card, monthly statement, and a cheque book. There are no annual maintenance charges for BSBDA customers.Regular savings bank account holders will continue to get eight free ATM transactions (5 at SBI ATMs + 3 at ATMs of other banks) in metro cities and 10 free transactions in non-metro cities (5 at SBI ATMs + 5 at ATMs of other banks) in a month.TOI

New Delhi: While the Congress-led Opposition is yet to reach to a consensus on a common candidate for the presidential poll 2017, BJP is mulling nominating a Dalit candidate for the post of the President of India. If the BJP decides to nominate a Dalit or backward leader, Jharkhand governor Draupadi Murmu and Union social justice minister Thawar Chand Gehlot may get chance to hold the country’s second most coveted job. President Pranab Mukherjee’s term as President of India will end in July. Jammu :A GREF labourer was killed and 5 others, including a BSF head constable, were injured as Pakistani troops resorted to unprovoked mortar shelling and automatic weapons fire at various places along the Line of Control in Rajouri and Poonch districts of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday morning.Though the identity of deceased was yet to be known, defence ministry spokesperson Lt Colonel Manish Mehta said “a GREF labourer was martyred and a driver along with a BSF head constable sustained splinter injury.” Those who were injured are out of danger, he added. Srinagar : Very young and quite educated — from a 15-year-old school student to graduates, post-graduates, techies, an M Phil degree holder and even a doctorate. That’s the profile of many of those who have joined the renewed indigenous militancy in the Valley, fuelled by the life and death of Hizbul commander Burhan Wani and what followed in its wake. According to data compiled by security agencies, 67 local recruits have joined the militancy in the Valley since Wani’s killing in an encounter last July. Of them, 50 are from south Kashmir, Wani’s native region; 63 are below the age of 30, including two 16-year-olds and one 15-year-old; and, only three are “recycled militants”, or those who went back to militancy after being jailed.The data reveals that in South Kashmir, nine are from Pulwama district, 9 from Awantipora (including Tral), 13 from Kulgam, 11 from Shopian, eight from Anantnag. 8 fresh recruits have joined militancy in north Kashmir: two from Kupwara, one from Handwara, three from Bandipore and two from Sopore. In Central Kashmir, there are five such new recruits – three in Budgam and two in Srinagar.Security agencies reveal that 47 among these new local recruits have joined Hizbul Mujahideen, 18 are with Lashkar and the allegiance of two is unknown. New Delhi: Central Government today said the latest notification on cattle issue was confined only to the sale of the same and had nothing to do with the slaughter issue and the notification in no way trespasses on the rights of the state Governments."The notification has nothing to do whether you can slaughter a cattle or not," Finance Minister Arun Jaitley told reporters here.He said the states have their own laws besides Article 48 of Constitution which directs about animal protection. Under the said Article, state (or the Govt) shall endeavour to organise agriculture and animal husbandry on modern and scientific lines and shall, in particular, take steps for preserving and improving the breeds, and prohibiting the slaughter, of cows and calves and other milch and drought cattle.UNI

New Delhi: UPSC Results 2016 was released on Wednesday and for the first time records of several years were broken, as 50 Muslims this year cleared the prestigious examination for the top position of IAS, IFS and IPS. But this year records of past several years were broken as nine out of 50 Muslims who cleared IAS exams secured their position in top 100 ranks. These 9 toppers include, Bilal Mohiuddin Bhat from Kashmir who secured 10th position, Muzammil Khan (22nd rank), Shaikh Tanveer Asif (25th rank), Hamna Mariyam (28th rank), Zaffar Iqbal (39th rank), Rizwan Basha Shaikh (48th rank), Sheikh Abdul Rahman (62nd rank), Arif Ahsan (74th rank) and Syed Fakhruddin Hamid (86th rank).Out of total 1,099 successful candidates in final list of the UPSC exams, 50 Muslims have made it to this year’s result, with Bilal Mohiuddin on 10th rank. New Delhi: “It was a mistake to educate my daughter and send her to IIT. I should have saved all the money for her dowry,” said the father of a PhD scholar who was found hanging from a ceiling fan on the Delhi campus on Tuesday evening.Outside the AIIMS mortuary on Wednesday afternoon, 28-year-old Manjula Devak’s parents waited for doctors to complete the post-mortem and take their daughter’s body home. Less than 24 hours ago, at around 7.38pm, police had broken open the door of Manjula’s flat at Nalanda apartments at IIT to find the research scholar hanging from the fan. There was no forced entry, suggesting that prima facie it was a suicide. She was last seen on the campus on Monday afternoon and had last spoken to her mother on Sunday.Though the family accused Manjula’s husband Ritesh of demanding Rs 20-25 lakh dowry, they are unsure what prompted the young woman to end her life on Tuesday. Lucknow:A case pending at the National Commission for Minorities will now be disposed of within a month, said Gairul Hasan Rizvi, the newly appointed chairperson of the commission. Rizvi was speaking to reporters in Lucknow on Wednesday. In another decision, he said, the commission will be expanding physical presence to all minority populous states and do on the spot resolution of issues.Addressing reporters in the city, Rizvi said that there are about 1500 pending applications with the commission currently, with most of them being from Bengal. "It takes years for a case to be resolved because of unending procedures of writing letters to and fro departments and individuals. Lucknow: Newly-appointed chairman of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) Ghayorul Hasan Rizvi on Wednesday said triple talaq in one go was wrong and the practise should be banned.On his first visit to Lucknow, Rizvi said the NCM was not empowered to take direct action on complaints received by it. “I have just taken charge and found that the procedure being adopted by the Commission in such matters was not right. As a result, there is a lot of delay in disposal of cases,” said Rizvi.“We have got maximum number of complaints of violation of the rights of minorities from West Bengal,” he said and added that the NCM would adopt a time-bound approach to ensure prompt redressal. hindustantimes

Tension gripped the Sadar subdivision of Jharkhand’s Hazaribagh district Wednesday after half-a-dozen Bajrang Dal activists were injured in stone-pelting. In another incident in the area, the Zila Parishad chairperson’s husband and his driver were shot at. Police have said the 2 incidents were not related and have clamped Section 144 of CrPC to prevent any untoward incident. Heavy force has been deployed. Police said the stone-pelting took place around 10 am when a bus occupied by Bajrang Dal activists was on Zakir Hussain Road. It was on its way to Dhanbad. Some reports said the activists raised slogans in the name of Ram which members of another community found objectionable. Some members of the minority community stopped the bus and an altercation followed, leading to stone-pelting, which left the driver and six activists injured. DC Ravi Shankar Shukla said:“An FIR has been lodged and half-a-dozen people arrested. Reasons behind stone-pelting are being ascertained. There are different versions. One says the altercation broke out when the bus brushed past another vehicle.” While the activists are learnt to have alleged that the stone-pelting was planned, Shukla said: “There is no evidence to suggest that.” indianexpress

Bhopal:A structure inside Bhopal’s Hamidia hospital that sparked communal tensions in the heart of the city isn’t a mosque as claimed by Muslim groups but a “heritage entrance gate”, archaeologists said on Wednesday evening.Dr Ahmed Ali from the state archeology and archives department termed the two-storeyed structure as a “heritage entrance gate structure over 200 years old” on which later a memorial plaque for the World War I martyrs was put. He said it was not a mosque at all.“I have communicated my findings to the government so that there is no doubt in anybody’s mind on this issue now on”, he said.This came after hours of stone pelting and arson in old Bhopal where Hindus and Muslims clashed over the right to pray inside the structure found during excavations recently. Muslims called the structure a mosque and wanted to pray inside but were denied permission.

Saharanpur:Sumit Rana was a Thakur, Ashish Kumar a Dalit. Sumit, 26, lived in Rasoolpur Tang village and Ashish, 20, was a resident of Sui Kheda, roughly 50 km away. Unknown to each other, the two youths became victims of the deadly caste violence that hit Shabbirpur village twice in a span of 18 days.The 2 deaths were the latest casualty in a series of clashes that has rocked Saharanpur district in western Uttar Pradesh. The violence has also left scores wounded. New Delhi : AAP has announced to hold its own hackathon of EVMs or Electronic Voting Machines on the same day as the Election Commission’s all-party challenge that starts June 3. The party has maintained that EVMs can be manipulated in favour of a particular party by using certain codes, and also opted out of the EC challenge after the panel refused to provide it access to the motherboard during the challenge. The party last month also held a live demonstration of hacking of a prototype EVM in a special session of the Delhi Assembly.“We have conveyed to the Election Commission that we will hold EVM hackathon on the day of EC’s EVM challenge,” said AAP leaders Saurab Bharadwaj, Dilip Pandey and Gopal Rai.
